October 2001
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - The Moravian College Chemistry
Department will host the 35th annual meeting of the Middle Atlantic
Association of Liberal Arts Chemistry Teachers, MAALACT 2001. The meeting
will be held on Friday October 5 and Saturday, October 6. MAALACT is
a professional association of college chemistry faculty from the independent
liberal arts colleges of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, the southern regions
of New York State, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and
the District of Columbia. Its purposes are to facilitate the exchange
of ideas, enhance professional development, and promote the interests
of small college chemistry programs. Seventy-six faculty members from
44 colleges will be attending the meeting.
The keynote speaker will be Professor George Bodner of
the Purdue University, a noted researcher in chemical education. Other
meeting sessions will explore a variety of issues in chemical education
at liberal arts colleges. His lecture will describe some of the ways
in which researchers collect data, starting with the simplest source,
an analysis of mistakes students make on exams, and working toward the
most productive source of data, the deep understanding that can be obtained
by clinical interviews.
Moravian College is a private, coeducational, selective
