(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)-Moravian College will kick-off
the Fall Monday Roundtable Series with a lecture by Dr. Hans Wuerth
on Monday, October 15, at 7 p.m. in Prosser Auditorium. The lecture,
"The Former Jewish Ghetto in Cracow, Poland Revisited: Impressions
before and after the Filming of Spielberg's Schlindler's List,"
is open to the public and admission is free. Wuerth's insightful and
fascinating slide/lecture presentation will focus on the history of
the Jewish population in the historic city of Cracow, Poland.
Wuerth will display slides as he presents a tour of former
Jewish district of Kazimierz as it looks today and compares it to the
former ghetto in Podgorze across the Vistula River. He will also present
slides and discuss the former concentration camp in Plaszow. The photos
were taken in 1992 and 2001, some of the sites were depicted in the
movie "Schindler's List.
Recently retired from a distinguished career as professor
of German at Moravian College, Wuerth is recognized for his scholarly
publications and lectures related to the Holocaust both here and abroad.
Wuerth has generously given his energies and expertise to many organizations
and committees throughout his life, and served as president of the Bethlehem
Scwabisch Gmund Association for many years. During frequent travels
to Germany and to other European countries he led numerous study and
bicycle tours, including escorting thirteen students of German to the
German Consulate and to the Goethe Institute in New York City in 1997.
Wuerth continues to commit both his professional and personal
energies to education as key to understanding. The focus of his current
scholarly activities concentrates on pre-war and post-war German literature.
A second focus is on certain aspects of National Socialism, the Holocaust,
Genocide and Racism.
