(Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania) - Moravian College Economics Professor Peter von Allmen
recently co-authored the book, The Economics of Sports. von Allmen collaborated
with Temple University professor Michael Leeds to produce the first
textbook focusing directly on the economic underpinnings of the sports
world. von Allmen is currently using the work to teach his "Economics
of Sports" class at Moravian.
The Economics of Sports introduces the essential core
economic concepts and then develops them with examples and applications
from the sports industry. Three of the four sections are devoted to
illustrating prominent areas of economics: industrial organization,
public finance, and labor economics. The final section provides insights
into theories related to the not-for-profit sector of the economy. The
book incorporates the latest industry news and the most influential
cases throughout sports history. It was designed for both majors and
non-majors, requiring only a basic one-semester understanding in the
principles of microeconomics.
The Economics of Sports is already in use at a number
institutions including Anderson University, Penn State University at
Behrend College, Temple University, Clemson University, University of
Rochester, University of Nevada, Mount Saint Mary's College, Indiana
University of Pennsylvania, Fairfield University, Flagler College, Lafayette
College, Moravian College, Springfield College, University of Wisconsin
/ Lacrosse, University of Wisconsin /Parkside, University of Florida,
University of Rhode Island, University of San Diego, Wichita State University,
University of Texas at Austin, Villanova University, Washington University
(MO), and Winthrop University.
Many college professors, who plan to use it in their own
classes, reviewed the book. Karl Einolf of Mount St. Mary's said, "This
is the first book that uses economics theory to explain the many conundrums
in the world of sports. It will be a welcome addition to my classroom
and a great roadmap for instructors developing Economics of Sports courses
in the future...Leeds and von Allmen turn every sports enthusiast into
a fan of economics."
von Allmen is the chair of the Moravian College Business
and Economics. He holds a B.A. from the College of Wooster and earned
his Ph.D. at Temple University. His research includes the use of quantitative
methods in the teaching of economics, the economics of sports, and family
labor supply models. In addition to the economics of sports, he teaches
microeconomics, econometrics, economics of health and health care, and
labor economics. Before teaching at Moravian College, von Allmen worked
for WEFA Group, a well-known economic forecaster.
The Economics of Sports is published by Addison Wesley.
