(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)- Moravian College will celebrate
Homecoming 2001,"A Greyhound Odyssey," beginning Friday, October
19. The 2nd Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony will be held at 7:30 p.m.
in Peter Hall on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus in Historic Bethlehem.
The Moravian College Alumni Association will present the
first annual Benigna Education Award to John T. Burke '56 for his outstanding
contributions to the field of education. An innovative educator and
award-winning administrator, Burke has dedicated his life to bringing
educators, administrators, and legislators together for the betterment
of education.
A
1948 Liberty High School graduate, Burke attended Moravian College after
completing four years in the U.S. Air Force Special Intelligence. While
at Moravian, he was president of the Moravian College Veterans Association
and later became Moravian's Alumni Association president. Jack received
his BA from Moravian in 1956 and his master's degree from Lehigh University
in 1958. In 1956 he began his thirty-seven year career with the Bethlehem
Area School District where he served as teacher, curriculum specialist,
elementary principal, and acting assistant superintendent. Under his
innovative leadership, William Penn Elementary became a model for cooperative
teaching. Hanover Elementary achieved consistent, long term academic
success along with a positive home/school environment.
Moravian
will present its Emerging Leader Award to Audrey Weaver '98 for her
active support and leadership in alumni programming. Weaver is an instructional
designer with Systems and Computer Technology Corporation Malvern, Pennsylvania.
She is the co-chair of the Young Alumni Association's Student Relation
Committee and a member of the Philadelphia Young Alumni Association
and the Blue & Grey Club.
The Haupert Humanitarian Award will be presented to J.
Hugh Gratz '70 for his professional contributions in teaching family
therapy, working with victims of trauma in Central America and commitment
to anti-racism projects and related social justice issues. Gratz is
a clinical social worker in private practice. He received a MSW from
the University of Pittsburgh. Gratz's past awards include the Living
Treasure Award presented by Advanta, the Virginia Satir Network. He
was selected in 1988 as the Central New York Social Worker of the Year
and was inducted into the Moravian College Athletics Hall of Fame in
1994.
The
Unsung Hero award will be presented to Bill Bauman '74, an administrative
assistant for the Music Department at Moravian College and production
coordinator for the Moravian College Theatre Company. The Award highlights
exceptional dedication and service of an alumnus/alumna whose important
contributions to the College and Alumni Association have not been duly
recognized. Bauman graduated from Moravian with BA in English. At Moravian
he acted, costumed, and directed for what is now the Moravian College
Theater Company. He participated in first presentations of Summer Dinner
Theatre at Moravian. Upon graduation he was awarded the Patricia Erskine
Memorial Award for Excellence in Theatre. Bauman graduated from Ohio
University in 1976 with MFA in Theatre; while there created and taught
courses in "Child Dramatic Literature," "Children's Theatre,"
and "Puppetry."
The
Young Alumni Achievement award will be presented to Dave Zinczenko '91
for achieving exceptional success in his profession. Zinczenko was named
Editor-In-Chief of Men's Health magazine, a Rodale publication, in July
of last year. He oversees the editorial content of Men's Health's U.S.
edition, 21 international editions, brand extensions, and websites.

Gift for Reunion Class: Class of 1951 Women; Largest Matching Gift
for a Reunion Class: Class of 1976; Highest Giving Participation for
Reunion Class: Class of 1931 Women.
Other homecoming events include the annual Homecoming
Dance for current students on Friday evening, and the 10th Annual Rocco
Calvo Invitational Alumni Golf Tournament at Locust Valley Golf Course
in Coopersburg at 10 a.m., Friday.
On Saturday, October 20 at 11:50 a.m., the Homecoming
Parade will begin near the "1742 plaque" on Locust and Monocacy
streets. Marchers and floats will proceed down Locust Street, cross
Main Street, turn right on New Street, turn left onto Fairview Street
and finally turn left onto Center Street where it will end on Center
and Elizabeth Avenue about 12:30 pm.
Kickoff for the football game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
as the Greyhounds take on Wilkes College. Tailgating will take place
throughout the game on the practice field across from Steel Field. Tickets
are available at the gate. To enter the tailgating area adults must
purchase an additional ticket for $5. The Art Department, Greyhound
Track & Field, The Moravian MBA, and the Continuing and Graduate
Studies Advisory Board will be sponsoring tailgate parties.
The Class of 1986 will hold its 15 -year reunion while
the class of 1996 has scheduled a five-year reunion that will be held
in the HUB Pavilion following the game. The Class of 1991 will have
its 10-year reunion Friday night at the Comfort Suites in Bethlehem.
