News Release
November 2001
This exhibition makes the notion of structure familiar
-- and even compelling -- to an audience wanting to learn how to look
at abstract art.
Co-organized by Linda Francis and Marjorie Welish, STRUCTURES
grew out of conversations they had about the nature of structure and
the structural basis of formal abstraction in painting. Included are
paintings by Michael Brennan, Linda Francis, Nancy Haynes, James Hyde,
Thomas Nozkowski, Marjorie Welish, and Kes Kapkus.
Included in this show are paintings based on analogies
with mathematical diagrams or architectural objects. Others contrast
optical with tactile sensation. Another artist thinks of color relations,
of left/right, up/down, part/whole. Yet another artist superimposes
cosmological systems over city plans to create encyclopedic arrays of
cultural knowledge.
STRUCTURES will run through 6 January 2002.
