As
part of Moravian College’s African-American History Month celebration,
H. Paty Eiffe Gallery is pleased to present work by Dane Tilghman. A
reception will be held Thursday, January 17, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.. Later
that evening, Moravian College will remember the birthday of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. with a special celebration at 8:00 p.m. in Johnston
Hall.
Dane Tilghman has taken his artwork toward new dimensions,
from realism to his own stylish combination of surrealism and primitive
elongation. He has established himself as one of the premier painters
of African-American golf art and Negro League baseball images. Since
1979, he has exhibited his works throughout the United States at art
festivals and galleries where he has received numerous awards, including
the Medal of Honor in Graphics from the American Artists Professional
League. In 1999, a baseball image was accepted at the Baseball Hall
of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He has completed a baseball mural for Turner
Stadium, Atlanta, GA, and had a display of Negro League prints at Veterans
Stadium in Philadelphia, PA, during 2000.
His work has appeated in Sports Illustrated, on ESPN’s
website, Scholastic Books, and the Western Journal of Black Studies,
volume 16. TV shows such as “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne”
have featured Mr. Tilghman’s work. He was commissioned by the
100 Black Men of America to complete their annual poster in 2000. Articles
have appeated about him in U.S. Art, Upscale and Black Parenting magazines.
His work was also included in Four Seasons of Chester County by Red
Hamer, featuring the work of Chester County artists.
His work is included in the collections of Nelson Mandela,
Bill Cosby, Dave Winfield, Ozzie Davis, and other notables; corporate
collectors include Luster Products, Nabisco and Southco. He has exhibited
at the Afro-American Historical and Cultural Museum, Philadelphia, PA;
Widener University, Chester, PA; West Chester University, PA; University
of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and Butler Institute of Fine Art,
Youngstown, OH. A resident of Exton, PA, he received a B.F.A. from Kutztown
University.
H. Paty Eiffe Gallery is located in the Haupert Union
Building, at Laurel and Monocacy Streets on the Main Campus of Moravian
College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The gallery is open to the public
free of charge. Bethlehem is sixty miles north of Philadelphia and ninety
miles west of New York City. The Haupert Union Building is open daily
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight.
