(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)- Moravian College resumes its
Monday Roundtable Series with a lecture/slide presentation by Dr. Mark
A. Malley, "The Amistad, Civil Rights, and Art Education, on February
11, 7:00 p.m., in Prosser Auditorium. Malley is an assistant professor
of art education at Moravian College.
As an Amistad writer and pilot teacher for the Amistad
Institute Project (LEARN), Malley created and developed art lessons
that have touched on the human condition of slavery and related civil
rights issues of the period, and how these have impacted the history
and the people of the United States. This major educational project
partners 30 urban, suburban, and rural classrooms throughout the state
of Connecticut. Students collaboratively work on common themes with
an emphasis that facilitates meaningful, intellectual connections and
friendships.
Malley earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
in Urban Education. Areas of his studies included Specialization in
Art Education, Fine Arts, Painting and Psychology. Currently he teaches
Art Education courses, including Art Education Curriculum, Seminar,
Student Teaching Seminar and Studio courses, including Two-Dimensional
Design and Painting 1 at Moravian College.
Malley participates in exhibitions, both locally and out
of state. In 1992 he was awarded the Artist as Teachers Award by the
Vermont Studio Guild. He is a member of the National Art Education Association
(NEA), recently giving a major presentation about his research and study.
He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association (PAEA)
and serves as adviser for the student chapter at Moravian.
