(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)— Dr. John McDermott recently
retired after 34 years of extraordinary and dedicated service to Moravian
College, including 19 as professor of education and 15 as vice president
for planning and research.
At a meeting in April, the Joint Board of Trustees - a
collective of all College and Seminary trustees - awarded McDermott
emeritus status at both the College and the Seminary in recognition
of his sustained and significant contributions to the institutions.
"We will all miss his leadership, his intellectual
courage, and his collegiality," said Ervin J. Rokke, Moravian College
president. "John has been a valued member of my senior staff, conducting
valuable institutional research and providing outstanding leadership
throughout our 'Commission on the Future' and other strategic planning
processes."
The College recently announced the appointment of Dr.
Ann K. Stehney as director of planning and research. In that role, Stehney
will coordinate and continue to refine the strategic planning, institutional
research, and assessment activities of the College and Seminary.
Stehney taught as a visiting professor in our Department
of Mathematics at Moravian during the past academic year. "Dr.
Stehney brings most impressive credentials and experience to her new
position at Moravian," said Ervin J. Rokke, Moravian College president.
"Her extensive work in higher education has included strategic
planning, development and assessment of academic programs, institutional
research, evaluation of teaching effectiveness, and student recruitment
and retention. In more than three decades of teaching, research, and
administration in higher education, she has served as a faculty member,
department chair, academic dean, and applied mathematician."
Stehney came to Moravian last year
from Cedar Crest College, where she was dean of the faculty. Her other
distinguished appointments include that of associate dean of Douglass
College at Rutgers from 1994 to 2000; research staff member at the Center
for Communications Research in Princeton, a division of the Institute
for Defense Analyses, from 1983 to 1994; and professor of mathematics
and Department Chair during 15 years of service at Wellesley College.
Stehney earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Bryn
Mawr College. She received her doctorate in mathematics from State University
of New York at Stony Brook.
Moravian College is a private, coeducational,
selective liberal arts college located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Tracing
its founding to 1742, it is recognized as America's sixth-oldest college.
