News Release
August 2002
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)— The Moravian College
Admission Office is reporting another record-breaking year, and the
Class of 2006 will be the second largest in its 260-year history. The
College is expecting 375 freshmen to arrive this fall, just short of
the record number of 378 that enrolled two years ago.
In addition, the College set a record for the number of
early decision applications, filling nearly one-third of its class through
the plan reserved for high-achieving students who have selected Moravian
as their top college choice.
"The Admissions Committee was very impressed with
the caliber of the applicant pool. The majority of students really challenged
themselves in the classroom with Advanced Placement and Honors level
courses making the selection process that much more competitive"
said Jim Mackin, director of admissions. "When students go the
extra mile and are serious about their education, the bar is raised
and everyone wins."
"We are very pleased to deliver this class to the
faculty of Moravian College" said Bernard Story, vice president
for enrollment. "In addition to its large size, the Class of 2006
brings a great deal of enthusiasm for joining this community. It is
particularly rewarding to discover that so many of these students have
had Moravian on the top of their list."
The Class of 2006 is also among the most academically
prepared. With SAT scores topping 1100 and with nearly one-quarter coming
from the top tenth of their high school class, Moravian continues to
attract high caliber students.
The College points to a number of reasons for its recent
success in admission, most notably the expanded use of merit scholarships,
the aggressive building campaign, and the recent inclusion of Moravian
in such prestigious college guides as The Princeton Review’s Best
345 Colleges.
"The word is surely getting out about the quality
of life on the Moravian campus, and we are excited about becoming a
truly hot college in the very near future," said Story.
Moravian College is a private, coeducational, selective
liberal arts college located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Tracing its
founding to 1742, it is recognized as America's sixth-oldest college.
