(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - The Moravian College Arts
& Lectures Committee will present the lecture “Women in Science,”
presented by Dr. Magdolna Hargittai, on Thursday, October 24, at 8 p.m.,
in Dana Lecture Hall.
Professor Hargittai is employed by the Structural Chemistry
Research Group, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Eotvos University, Budapest.
She has served as a visiting scientist at a number of American universities,
and lectured previously at Moravian six years ago. Her presentation
is designed to stimulate women students to a greater awareness of opportunities
in science. Among her research interests is symmetry as a bridge between
the sciences and the humanities.
The seminar will be based on her personal experiences,
and conversations with famous women scientists. It will feature women
who excelled in their particular scientific field, sometimes against
all odds, and many of them also successfully managed to hold high administrative
positions. The intriguing topic of missing recognition, especially when
it is the question of the Nobel Prize, will be touched upon.
Some statistics about the participation of women at different
levels of academia will be shown and examples from all over the world
will illustrate women’s accomplishments in different areas of
the sciences. They include the three living Nobel Laureate women, the
first woman professor of Tokyo University, and other luminaries, such
as a real Rothschild and the Royal Princess of Thailand.
This program is free and open to the public. Dana Lecture
Hall is located in Collier Hall of Science at Main and Locust Streets
