(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - Moravian College will hold
“Homecoming Houndfest,” the 2002 annual homecoming weekend
beginning Friday, November 1. Homecoming begins with the 11th Annual
Rocco Calvo Invitational Alumni Golf Tournament at Locust Valley Golf
Course, Coopersburg; and the 3rd Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony at 7:30
p.m. in Peter Hall, Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus in historic Bethlehem.
The Moravian College Alumni Association will present Dr.
Jack R. Ridge ’53, with the 2002 Benigna Education Award in recognition
of his outstanding career as a physics instructor and professor in higher
education. Jack graduated Summa Cum Laude from Moravian College in 1953
with a triple major in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. He completed
his M.S. in physics from Lehigh University in 1956. For forty-one years,
Dr. Ridge dedicated his life to inspiring countless students with his
passion for physics and his love of learning. His devotion to both his
classroom teaching and his endless one-on-one tutorials helped to transform
numerous struggling students into dedicated physicists. Dr. Ridge was
a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellow, a member of the College’s
Board of Trustees, and the recipient of Moravian’s Lindback Award
for Distinguished Teaching.
Moravian will present its Emerging Leader Award to Tennant
Magee ’96 for his dedicated service to his alma mater. As an undergraduate,
Tennant was active in a variety of activities that included participation
on the senior class gift committee, student phonathon, United Student
Government, the Comenian, Delta Tau Delta, and the golf team. Following
graduation Tennant received a Master of Political Science from Lehigh
University and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore’s School
of Law. He is presently working for the Maryland State Attorney’s
office and resides in Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to his demanding
graduate schedule, Tennant has continued his involvement with Moravian,
serving on the Young Alumni Board, acting as class agent, and attending
numerous events and programs.
The 2002 Haupert Humanitarian Award will be presented
to Frederick P. Rooney ’75 in recognition of his dedication to
issues of justice. His innovative work has significantly contributed
towards providing access to justice for the impoverished and minorities
on the local, national, and international level. Rooney graduated from
Moravian College with a B. A. in Latin American Studies in 1975, and
earned an M.A. in Bicultural/Bilingual Studies in 1983. He received
his J.D. from the City University of New York’s School of Law
in 1986 and established a private, community based, and bi-lingual law
firm in Bethlehem. The Pennsylvania Bar Association recently recognized
Fred’s firm, which focuses on community law issues, custody issues,
and affordable law, for its pro bono work. In 1998 Fred returned to
CUNY to direct its newly established Community Legal Resource Network
(CLRN), a program that is a part of a consortium of law schools.
The Moravian College Alumni Association will present Roy
B. Goshorn ’58, with its 2002 Comenius Award in recognition of
his distinguished career in television as a news producer, editor, writer,
and weather broadcaster. Goshorn earned his B. A. in English from Moravian
and his M. A. in journalism from Lehigh University. In 1971 he began
a twenty-year career at the ABC-TV News Bureau where he worked as assignment
editor, writer, and producer for the ABC Evening News and Nightline.
During the last presidential election, ABC called Roy out of retirement
to help follow the national elections in Florida and the third presidential
debate in St. Louis. Roy’s assignments included leading a camera
team for an interview with Eldridge Clever in Algeria and heading up
the press pool for President Nixon's historic trip to China. His team
was the first to use state-of-the-art portable satellite coverage from
China. After retirement Roy eventually moved back to his hometown of
Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he has worked at the local TV and radio
stations and served as the Accu-Weatherman, broadcasting to more than
one hundred radio and television stations.
The Moravian College Alumni Association will present Scott
D. Pfeiffer ’92 with its 2002 Young Alumni Achievement Award in
recognition of his exceptional career in architectural acoustics. Scott
graduated from Moravian in 1992. He studied acoustical engineering at
the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, Denmark for the 1992-93
academic year. He joined Kirkegaard Associates in Chicago, Illinois,
where he is an associate, serving as senior consultant in architectural
acoustics and project manager for acoustic renovation or design of new
facilities. Scott has managed projects and conducted studies around
the globe on facilities such as Orchestra Hall, Chicago; Royal Festival
Hall, London; Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Scotland; China Trust Music
Hall, Taiwan; Maui Multi-Cultural Performing Arts Center, Hawaii; New
York State Theater and the Juilliard Theatre at Lincoln Center, New
York; Boston Symphony Hall, Boston; Academy of Music, Philadelphia;
Teatro de Colon, Buenos Ares, Argentina; and Sala Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo,
Brazil. Scott is the president of his local chapter of the Acoustic
Society of America (ASA) and chaired the Spring 2001 national meeting
of the Acoustical Society of America that was held in Chicago.

Other Homecoming events on Friday include the annual Homecoming
Dance for current students on Friday evening, and the 11th Annual Rocco
Calvo Invitational Alumni Golf Tournament at Locust Valley Golf Course
in Coopersburg at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, November 2, tours of the new Priscilla Payne
Hurd Academic Complex are offered at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Homecoming
Parade and Children’s Costume Contest will begin at 11:15 a.m.
in front of the Haupert Union Building. Marchers and floats will follow
a route that will end on Center and Elizabeth Avenue about 12:30 p.m.
The Moravian Greyhounds will take on Albright at 1 p.m.
at Steel Field. In order to preserve the practice field no cars will
be allowed on the practice field. This year marks the first annual “Houndfest”
offering a smorgasbord of opportunities for alumni to congregate on
the field for Homecoming. Available are tables and grilles for tailgaters
on the practice field at a cost of $15; or an $8 prepaid picnic buffet;
or a la carte items will be available throughout the day. A Kidsfest
area will be set-up for children.
From 5 to 7 p.m., the Homecoming Art and Music Fest
will feature a picnic dinner, Battle of the Bands, and a student/faculty
alumni sidewalk art sale. The classes of 1982, 1987, 1992, and 1997
will hold reunions in tents on the Houndfest field. In case of inclement
weather, or the practice field is wet, Houndfest may be cancelled. Announcements
