Moravian College to honor 35th anniversary of Reeves Library - December 10

New carillon to ring from the rooftop of Reeves Library

(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) - In honor of the 35th anniversary of the opening of Reeves Library of Moravian College and the 10th anniversary of the completion of its two wings, there will be a celebration on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the Rare Books Room of the library. The first event will be a short ceremony starting at 5:00 p.m. to dedicate a book case commissioned by Robert P.L. Frick, class of 1949, from the Duckloe Brothers for the Rare Books Room in thanks for his continuous support. This book case was a gift in the memory of Frick's friend and fellow student, Reverend Henry L. Williams, class of 1948, who was Reeves Library's first librarian. The book case is the same as one he gave a few years ago. Frick has also given a copy of Orbis Sensualium Picti by Comenius (1746).

A Friends Group for Reeves Library will also be announced at this reception. The Friends Group will consist of students, faculty, alumni, and lovers of the library who will provide funds and support of the library.

New carillon to ring from the rooftop of Reeves Library

Just in "Tyme" for the 35th anniversary of Reeves Library, Moravian College and Moravian Theological Seminary have installed a new carillon atop Reeves Library on the Main Street Campus. The Carillon will again serve as a "community timepiece," as it has for over 25 years, ringing hourly to mark the time.

In the past year or two the carillon has begun skipping notes and has become increasingly unreliable, and repairing an instrument of this vintage was not cost-effective. With thoughtful input from Moravian's Chaplain, the Dean of the Seminary, Public Relations, Facilities Services and others, the College and Seminary selected Schulmerich's "Tyme Stryke" model. The new carillon is considered by many to produce the most dependable carillons in the world

In addition to hourly chimes, the new carillon comes with 120 pre-programmed hymns and songs, including Moravian's alma mater. A 49-note keyboard, linked to the main carillon, will also allow Moravian's students to play songs and hymns for the enjoyment of the entire campus community.

Moravian received a grant of $20,350 from the Reeves Foundation of Dover, Ohio to replace the carillon. The Reeves Foundation grant covered the full cost, including installation, of the new carillon.
