News Release
May 2003
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)—The St. Luke’s
School of Nursing at Moravian College today received full accreditation
from the Commission
on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for its bachelor of science
degree program. The news comes just days before Moravian College will
grant degrees to its inaugural class of nursing students at commencement
on Saturday, May 17. Officially recognized by the U.S. Secretary of
Education as a national accreditation agency, CCNE ensures the quality
and integrity of baccalaureate and graduate education programs preparing
effective nurses.
Accreditation is a voluntary, privately managed process of peer evaluation
of post-secondary education institutions and programs. Being accredited
imparts to the public, potential students, educational institutions,
government agencies, lenders, and others that the institution or program
meets an established standard of quality.
The St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing at Moravian College
was established in 1998 through a partnership between St. Luke’s
Hospital and Health Network and Moravian College. The students in the
nursing major have access to resources of St. Luke’s Hospital
while receiving a well-grounded liberal arts education. Throughout
the nursing curriculum, students are immersed in a variety of clinical
experiences emphasizing the promotion of health for diverse individuals,
families, and communities. More than 1,000 hours of clinical practice
provide the nursing student with ample opportunities to apply and test
theoretical concepts in a range of health-care settings. Learning experiences
are designed to foster intellectual inquiry, and critical thinking
is emphasized, enabling nursing graduates to practice in virtually
any health promoting or wellness care setting in addition to acute/chronic
hospital settings.
The Department of Nursing is chaired by professor Janet A. Sipple,
B.S.N., M.S.N., Ed.D. The nursing faculty is comprised of assistant
professors, Marianne T. Adam, B.S., M.S, Pamela Z. Adamshick, B.S.,
