(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)— Moravian College has developed a
program for students, faculty, and staff to have fun while learning
new skills with “Learning at Leisure,” a program designed
to offer both educational and fun classes in various areas of interest:
games, food, and crafts. The classes, which are open to students, faculty,
and the community, are taught by Moravian faculty as well as other
professionals associated with the college.
The basis for Learning at Leisure was formed when
Mark Kopenhaver, director of food services, began discussions with
Ann Claussen, director
of student activities, exploring ways to engage people in learning
outside the class room environment. “We wanted to develop programming
that would bring the campus community together and engage them in unique
learning activities not normally associated with college,” said
Ann Claussen. “We just announced the program and we already have
a number of students, faculty, and staff signed up for the classes.
Dick Claussen, coordinator of academic camps, will offer a beginner
class in the card game Bridge on Mondays, October 20 and 27, and November
3 and 10. He will introduce the basic concepts of the game and instruct
on how to play effectively and successfully.
The executive chef of the Wood Company (Moravian’s
Food Service Provider) will introduce the art of Cake Icing and Decorating
techniques
on Thursday, October 30. He will teach the fundamentals of creating
beautifully decorated cakes using piping and flowers.
How to make candy will be taught by Lou Ann Vlahovic, secretary/operator
for the Science Department, on Thursdays, November 6, 13, and 20. She
will demonstrate how to mold candies and fillings for candy and lollipops.
Participants will learn the proper preparation of chocolate for molding.
Recipes used during the demonstration will be distributed for your
own use.
On Thursday, November 20, the executive chef, Wood
Company will feature a class entitled “Death by Chocolate.” This
class will feature recipes and techniques for preparing chocolate
treats such
as Ganache, Truffles, Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Bread Pudding, Chocolate
Pecan Pie and Chocolate Trash. The same company will teach a course
in dining etiquette on Thursday, November 6.
For Harry Potter fans, Judith Green, assistant director of publications,
will instruct a course, October 2, 9, 16, and 23, on witchcraft, the
literary genre of the quest, and why it is that the Malfoy family is
evil and Knockturn Alley has no streetlights.
The executive chef will be back on Thursday, October 16 will a course
on safe sushi, teaching how to prep, pack, and roll safe sushi as well
as how to make California rolls, Philadelphia Rolls, Fruit Rolls, Inside-Out
Rolls, and Tear Drops.
Shay Jaymes will teach a course in Faux Stained Glass on Wednesdays
October 1, 8, and 15. You will learn to create projects that can be
used alone or in combinations to create framed artwork or decorative
window treatments.
On Tuesday, October 14, Dr. Rudy Ackerman, emeritus professor of art
at Moravian College, will tell stories and show slides of the adventures
he experienced in Western Europe, Greece, and Egypt with Moravian students
over the past 35 years.
