(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)— IMPACT
at Moravian College, in cooperation with Lehigh University, is sponsoring
a presentation
by Debra Davis on Tuesday, September 30 at 8:30 p.m. in Foy Concert
Hall (Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus). Davis is a high school librarian
who came out in May of 1998 as a transgender woman at Southwest High
School in the Minneapolis Public Schools.
Davis’s highly publicized transition is believed to be one
of the first successful transitions of a transgender person working
with children in secondary education in the nation. She literally left
school on a Friday as a man and returned that Monday as a woman. She
worked for another three-and–a–half years as a librarian
before retiring after 32 years of teaching.
Davis is the Executive Director of the Gender Education Center, a
small non-profit organization of differently gendered people devoted
to support, advocacy, and education. Over the past 10 years, this organization
has presented over 700 workshops. Davis is consulted by employers,
law enforcement, human rights agencies, and nonprofit service providers
regarding policies that affect transgender people. She is especially
successful in coordinating workplace transitions for transgender employees.
Debra is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences and conventions
through-out the country.
IMPACT, the student activities program board, strives to present
Innovative Multicultural Programming for Campus Togetherness. Nine
committee chairpersons program a wide variety of events which include
a comedy club, trips to shows in NYC, all-college dances, karaoke,
films, lectures, art exhibits, the organizational fair, a scholastic
scrimmage competition known as College Bowl, Family Day, and Homecoming.
