News Release
October 2003
(Bethlehem, Pa.)—Dr. Lisa Fischler, assistant professor
of political science at Moravian College, will present a talk offering
visual and verbal images of contemporary China on Monday, October 13,
at 7:00 p.m. in Prosser Auditorium, Haupert Union Building. The program
is the first in this year’s Moravian College Speaker Series.
Part travelogue, part philosophical musing, the
talk will address the theme of “contradictions” that
capture the widely divergent social, cultural, economic, and political
trends that characterize
China today. By encouraging audience participation, Dr. Fischler hopes
to generate a dialogue on China and its current situation.
Dr. Fischler’s professional duties and intense educational pursuits
have led her to work as a Researcher at UCLA’s East Asian Studies
Center, travel throughout East Asia, and fieldwork in South China and
Hong Kong. She has taught at UCLA’s Asian Seminar for teachers;
the Chinese University of Hong Kong; the University of Wisconsin, Madison;
and for the Monterey Volunteers Overseas, in association with which
she taught English as a Second Language to college and graduate students
in Kunming, Yunnan, People’s Republic of China. Her teaching
and research interests include comparative politics and women in politics.
Her recent publication is a chapter about “Women’s Activism
during Hong Kong’s Political Transition” that was published
in a book entitled Gender and Change in Hong Kong by Eliza Lee (University
of British Columbia Press, 2003). Dr. Fischler is proficient in Mandarin,
Cantonese and French and speaks German and Japanese.
The evening’s program is free and open to the public. A cafeteria-style
dinner is available at 6:15 p.m. ($7.70) prior to the lecture in the
United Brethren Church Room in the Haupert Union Building. The program
is sponsored by Moravian’s Office of Public Relations and the
Moravian College Alumni Association.
