News Release
October 2003
(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania)— The “indie band” of
a revolution (O.A.R.) will perform in concert at Moravian College on
Friday, November 21, at 8 p.m., in Johnston Hall. O.A.R. is on tour
in support of their most recent release, In Between Now and Then, which
marks their debut with Lava/Everfine Records. The album explores themes
of freedom, wanderlust, idealism, and love. The five-member band describes
the music as “rock and folk seasoned with island vibe roots rock—pinches
of ska and reggae.”
The band got its start when singer/lyricist Marc
Roberge teamed up with junior high classmate and best friend, drummer
Chris Culos. Although
Roberge liked music by Bob Marley and Crowded House, Culos listened
to Genesis, Metallica, and the Beastie Boys. Despite different musical
tastes, these two friends found common ground with the Pearl Jam video “MTV
Unplugged.” They invited guitarist Richard On and bassist Benj
Gershman to join their band.
O.A.R. released its first album, The Wanderer, for their growing fan
base in Washington D.C. Word of mouth began to spread about the band,
and soon after the release of this first album, the group was selling
out venues in college towns from the Midwest to New York. They met
saxophone player Jerry DePizzo at Ohio State University. He joined
the group, and they recorded their second album, Souls Aflame.
In February 2001, with support from the band, the
band’s manager
created Everfine Records. This company would further the popularity
of O.A.R. and its third release Risen. In the summer of 2002, O.A.R.
performed live with Sheryl Crow, Train, and Ziggy Marley. Later that
year, they released their fourth album Any Time Now.
Tickets will go on sale to the public starting October 27. General
admission tickets are $15. Tickets can be purchased at www.musictoday.com
