May 2004
(Bethlehem, Pa.)—Moravian College students
in the St. Luke's School of Nursing will leave Friday, May 7 for
Australia as part of
their nursing course, Globalization of Professional Nursing. The four
students: Britta Jacobson (Sister Bay, Wis.), Jennifer Malloy (Orwigsburg,
Pa.), Lauren Rozzelle (Baking Ridge, N.J.), and Alison Snyder (Bethlehem,
Pa.), will be hosted by the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba,
Queensland.
Maryellen Dye, R.N., Ph.D, associate professor of nursing, led the
students over the spring term in preparation of clinical placement
in Australia. According to Dye, the exchange fosters the advancement
of nursing through international sharing of research, practice and
scholarship.
“This experience gives the students a bigger view of the world,” Dr.
Dye said. “It allows them to see how the profession of nursing
is practiced in other places.” The students will observe hospital
units in neonatology, intensive care, emergency, outpatient services
and kidney dialysis. They’ll have the opportunity to discuss
nursing issues with colleagues with different backgrounds and perspectives.
The students will make a presentation to various professional and university
groups on the Medicare system in the United States.
Following the three-week clinical experience, the students will travel
throughout Australia. Destinations include the city of Brisbane, arid
Australian Bush country in the interior, Great Barrier Reef in the
north and Sydney Harbor and Opera House in the south. The group will
return to the United States on June 8, 2004.
