Bethlehem, Pa., May 3, 2005—Paper art conservator Susan L. Duhl,
now in private practice after a career in museums and archives, will speak to the Friends
of Reeves Library at the group’s annual meeting May 11.
Duhl will discuss “Caring for Your Paper Treasures,” which
may include paper-based works of art as well as library and archival materials. After
her lecture, she will answer questions, and, by prearrangement, describe the condition
and “cure” of items brought by audience members. These may be archival drawings
or watercolors, but not oils or three-dimensional works. Please call 610 861-1540 to

A founding member of the Art Conservators Alliance, Duhl maintains a conservation
studio in Bala Cynwyd. She has been the paper conservator on staff at the Conservation
Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia and the Rochester (New York) Museum
and Science Center. In addition, she has been a consultant to collections in San Francisco,
the New-York Historical Society, Winterthur Museum and Library in Delaware, the White
House, and Colonial Williamsburg, among many others. She is a much-sought-after lecturer
and has written for all the best-known journals in the museum conservation field.
Duhl is known at Moravian College for restoring two oversize 19th-century
astronomical charts from the College Archives—one exhibited in Buried Treasures,
a 2003 exhibit curated by archivist John Weeren. This chart is now on display at the
Chester County Historical Society.
Her talk will follow a brief meeting of Friends of the Library and will
be followed by refreshments.
