Bethlehem, Pa., May 6, 2005— Moravian College will hold commencement ceremonies
on Saturday, May 14, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in the outdoor quadrangle behind the Haupert
Union Building. The ceremony will conclude the 263rd academic year at Moravian, America’s
sixth-oldest college. In the event of rain, the program will be held in Johnston Hall.
The College will present an honorary doctorate to Gaston Caperton, former governor
of West Virginia, president of The College Board, a not-for-profit membership association
of more that 4,500 colleges, universities, and schools.
The College will grant degrees to approximately 348 bachelor degree candidates, 16 Master
of Business Administration degree candidates, and 10 Master of Education degree candidates.
Caperton is being honored for his efforts to lead America’s young men and women
to scholastic opportunity and success. Since he assumed leadership of the College Board
in 1999, he has moved quickly to improve the standards and to expand the reach of the
College Board's SAT®, the nation's premier college admissions exam, and Advanced
Placement Program® (AP®), a series of rigorous college-level courses given in
high schools. He has also spearheaded a sweeping series of complementary initiatives
that better enable the College Board to serve educators and millions of the nation’s
schoolchildren. One such service is collegeboard.com, the number one destination for
student research and application to colleges. Another new program is SpringBoard™,
a grade 6-12 suite of curricular, professional development, and diagnostic assessment

In honor of a longstanding Moravian College tradition, the graduating class recently
elected a faculty member and a student to speak at the commencement ceremony. Dr. Christopher
Jones has been selected to give the Statement to the Graduates. Jones, an assistant professor
of biology, has been teaching at Moravian since 1999. He is a graduate of Haverford College
and has received a M. Phil and Ph.D. from Yale University.
Michael McCartney (Harveys Lake, Pa.), Class of 2005, will deliver the Statement of
the Bachelor's Graduates. He is a double major in English and History. McCartney is a
Student, an active member of the Moravian College Theatre Company and a senator for the
United Student Government. He has been an active member of C3, Campus Community Connection.
McCartney has been inducted into the History, Theatre, Leadership and English honors
societies and participates on several committees. During his junior year he studied at
the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Oxford and this past summer he was
one of the first Moravian students to experience LeaderShape. McCartney plans to return
to Oxford this summer for additional study, and then to pursue an M.A. degree in Medieval
History at McGill University, Montreal.
Janette Roman (Sparta, N.J.), a candidate for the M.B.A., was selected
to deliver the Statement of the Master’s Graduates. Roman is an employee at Air Products & Chemicals,
Inc. where she holds the position of Performance Polymers Regional Analyst/SAP Power
User for Chemicals Decision Support. She has received numerous Employee Recognition Awards
from Air Products. A member of the Institute of Management Accountants, Roman received
a B.S. from Cedar Crest College.
The Moravian College baccalaureate service is scheduled for Friday,
May 13, at 5:30 p.m., in Central Moravian Church. The honored speaker will be Reverend
Luis A. Cortés,
executive director of the Hispanic Clergy of Philadelphia, and president of Nueva Esperanza,
Inc., a community development corporation.
