August 2005
Bethlehem, Pa., Tuesday, August 15, 2005—As Moravian College continues
a major initiative to increase the quality of its student body, the Admission Office
is reporting another record-breaking year. The incoming Class of 2009 will be among the
largest in its 263-year history. From its second largest applicant pool, the College
has enrolled 380 freshmen, equaling the size of the Class of 2008, the college’s
previous high mark for enrollment.
The Class of 2009 is also among the most academically prepared. The combined
SAT score of the class is at a record high and more than 30 percent of the new students
were ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
Other notable characteristics of the Class of 2009 include:
- 30% of the class has expressed an interest in majoring in the Natural Sciences
- Music enrollments have more than doubled in size
- A quarter of the freshmen were athletic team captains in high school
- 53 are recipients of the college’s prestigious Comenius Scholarship
- 7% are students of color
- 14 are recipients of the college’s Emerging Leader Scholarship
“The Class of 2009 is a welcome addition to the Moravian community.
Chosen from a very competitive applicant pool, this class is exceptionally well-prepared
and very well-balanced,” said Bernard Story, vice president for enrollment. “We
are particularly impressed by the large number of freshmen who are interested in studying
the sciences, and the unusually large number of students interested in studying music.
Such a balance is hard to achieve and we are proud to present this class to the faculty
of Moravian College.”
“This has been a great year overall for the college, said Jim Mackin,
director of admissions. “Nearly all of our admission goals were met; the number
of students interested in the sciences, in music, and in leadership activities; SAT scores
are at an all-time high, as is the percentage of students ranking in the top 10% of the
class. The Class of 2009 may be the best prepared group ever. We are very excited to
welcome this group to campus.”
