BETHLEHEM, PA --- Moravian College will celebrate a $2.6 million renovation
of its athletic facilities at the Steel Field Complex with a dedication ceremony on Saturday,
September 3, before the kickoff of the Greyhounds’ football game versus Delaware
Valley College. The extensive renovation project included installation of the new playing
surface on Rocco Calvo Field, expansion and resurfacing of Timothy Breidegam Track, exterior
and inter repairs to the grandstand, and a new scoreboard.
Kickoff is slated for 1:00
p.m. with the festivities for the new field and track to take place beginning at 12:50
p.m.
The ceremony will begin with the rededication of the Timothy Breidegam
Track. The track has been expanded to eight lanes and has been completely renovated with
a world-class Mondo running surface. The track bears the name of Moravian student Timothy
Breidegam, who left a lasting mark on the College during his years at Moravian. As a
member of the choir and the treasurer of the Beta Lambda Chi Fraternity, Tim was a popular
figure on campus with an infectious smile and an obvious love for Moravian. The United
Student Government has established an award in Tim’s name that is given annually
to the student and faculty member who best represent the positive spirit and dedication
that Tim always demonstrated at Moravian. Members of the Breidegam family will be on
hand to help with the ribbon cutting.
The ceremony will then move to the center of the
football field for the dedication of Rocco Calvo Field. With a state-of-the-art Sportexe
synthetic playing surface, a refurbished grandstand, and a new scoreboard, Moravian now
has field that is worthy of Rocco Calvo’s name. Rocco Calvo served Moravian College
as a head coach in three sports and as athletic director during more than four decades of service as
a Greyhound. Rocco achieved tremendous success on the gridiron, the hardwood, and the diamond, but it
was his positive interaction and devotion to his players that endeared him to generations of Hound athletes.
By dedicating this field in his name, we will insure that Rocco Calvo’s legacy will inspire many
more generations of Moravian athletes.
The ceremony will include two of Rocco’s former players – Dan
Nigito ’78 and Gary Martell ’76,
and their sons, current Greyhounds Dom Nigito ’07 and Shawn Martell ’07. Members of the Calvo
family will also be in attendance to partake in the ribbon cutting ceremony.
