News Release
September 2005
Bethlehem, Pa., September 9, 2005— The Priscilla Payne Hurd Gallery
at Moravian College will showcase works by The Guild of Papermakers and invited guests
on September 8 through October 9. Curated by Doug Zucco, an adjunct professor of art
at Moravian, the exhibit presents paper in the spotlight, and reflects the creative directions
taken by the members of the Guild to create books, print types, two- and three-dimensional
works, and other media.
Zucco is an artist who specializes in creating works with hand-made
paper. He has offered paper-making workshops throughout the region, including several
at Moravian College. He also creates paper and designs and develops books, such as “Seeing
Red” by
Clytie Alexander. “Live on Paper,” an exhibition from the book project, will
begin at the Berman Museum, Ursinus College, Collegeville, Pa., in September, and travel
to New York and other venues. His work is included in many prestigious collections throughout
the United States. Zucco is the recipient of a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on
the Arts for his book project, Live on Paper, and has also received a grant from the
Ford Foundation.
The exhibit features two-dimensional work, three-dimensional pieces,
sculptural pieces and books created by the artists from the same basic pulp material
into fascinating and innovative works of art. Visitors to the show are reminded that
an important element in appreciating handmade paper is to experience touching, which
is a unique invitation for this exhibition.
The Pennsylvania Guild of Papermakers is
a world-wide organization. The Philadelphia guild, the first paper mill in America
was established near Philadelphia by William Rittenhouse, an early German settler. Visitors
may tour a working model of the mill today.
