Life of the North American Indians Illustrated in Reeves Library Exhibit

Perceptions and Misperceptions to be Examined during Lecture on October 27

Bethlehem, Pa. October 13, 2005—The life of the North American Indian is majestically illustrated in the exhibit, Images and Illusions: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian, located on the lower level of Reeves Library.. The Moravian College Reeves Library Rare Books and Special Collections department have created this exhibition from the library’s special collections, including a sampling of texts and photogravure prints chosen from Curtis’ 20-volume masterwork, The North American Indian. Both beautiful and controversial, this work continues to influence perceptions of Native American history and cultures. The exhibit, which runs through December 20, is open to the public and admissions is free.

In connection with the exhibit, Mark Turdo ’97, curator for the Moravian Historical Society, will present Neither Noble Savage nor Heathen: Indian Portrayals in American History. Turdo will discuss how literature, art, popular culture and entertainment have influenced perceptions and misperceptions of Native Americans throughout America’s history on October 27 at 7 p.m. in Reeves Library. The talk is open to the public and admission is free.
