Bethlehem, Pa. October 26, 2005—Dr. Michael Fowlin (a.k.a. Mykee) will perform
his original and powerful presentation, “You Don’t Know Me Until You Know
Me,” bringing a heightened awareness of diversity issues to the Moravian College
campus community. The clinical psychologist will present a one-man show on Tuesday, November
1 at 8 p.m. in Foy Hall, located at the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus. The Moravian College
Counseling Center, the Arts and Lectures Committee, and IMPACT, the student activities
program board will sponsor the program, which open to the public and admission is free.
“You Don’t Know Me Until You Know Me,” deals with the issues of race,
discrimination, violence prevention, personal identity, suicide, gender equity, homophobia,
and the emotional pain felt by those who are considered to be “different.” In
a gripping, fast paced, 75-minute performance, Fowlin slips in and out of nine characters,
both male and female, who “share their stories.” The characters relate their
life-stories in an often humorous, but at times, heartbreaking manner. The performance
is based on the poem, I'm Still Here, by Langston Hughes.
Fowlin earned his doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Rutgers University. He
received a B.A. in Psychology from Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri where
he also spent much of his time in the Speech and Drama Department. A resident of Morristown,
New Jersey, Fowlin has traveled extensively to deliver his messages of tolerance.
Combining his passion for acting with his training as a clinical
psychologist, Mykee's unique approach uses the medium of performance to communicate
with the audience. He has worked extensively with teenagers across the United States,
using peer mediation, diversity workshops, violence prevention, and gender sensitivity
training. He transcends "normal" groupings
and stereotypes, and lives out his mission of unity. He is an intense and dynamic young
man that has and will continue to change the lives of teens.
