Bethlehem, Pa., November 1, 2005—Barbara Liebhaber, an assistant
professor of music education and pianist on the Moravian College faculty, has joined
Satori as educational consultant and pianist. Satori, a versatile chamber-music ensemble
directed by flutist Nora Suggs, includes mixed strings and winds.
Liebhaber is designing programs for Satori to present to students
in grades K – 12.
In February, Satori will do a children’s concert in Foy Hall on the Moravian campus,
at which Liebhaber will be narrator and lead the program.
On November 16, she and Satori will give a talk with musical examples
at an audiology conference at Lehigh Valley Hospital. The talk is called “How We Listen to Music” and
will feature music of Beethoven, who became deaf during his lifetime and yet continued
to compose music. An American Sign Language interpreter will be available to translate
for the hearing-impaired.
In December, Liebhaber will join Satori for two performances of works by Claude Bolling
(b. 1930), the French jazz composer.
The group—flute, guitar, piano, bass, and drums—will play two works never
performed in the Lehigh Valley. On December 1, they will perform at Kirkland Village;
on December 2, at Godfrey Daniels. The works were originally composed for Bolling to
play with Jean-Pierre Rampal and achieved international best-seller status on the album “Suites
for Flute and Jazz Piano.”
Liebhaber, who holds a B.A. from Brandeis University and an M.A. and a PhD. from Columbia
University, has been a member of the Moravian faculty since 1999. Suggs is an artist-lecturer
in music (flute).
