Bethlehem, Pa., November 17, 2005—Moravian College Jazz Combo I and Jazz Fusion
ensembles will perform in concert on Saturday, November 19 at 8 p.m. The concert will
take place at Foy Concert Hall, located on Moravian’s Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus
at the corner of Main and Church Streets in Bethlehem. Admission is $6.
Jazz Combo I will start the evening with seven pieces from across
jazz time periods that span from Frank Loesser’s “If I Were a Bell” from the musical
Guys and Dolls to ensemble pianist Keith LaBar’s “Midnight Blue.” The
group will also play “This Here” by Bobby Timmons, “Armageddon” by
Wayne Shorter, “Frelon Brun” by Miles Davis, “Intrepid Fox” by
Freddie Hubbard, and “Dat Dere” by Bobby Timmons.
Jazz Fusion will follow up with five pieces, with each member playing
at least one solo. They will play “Sponge” by Randy Brecker, “Toxic Hedgehog” by
Masato Nakamura and arranged by ensemble member Jen Grier, “Teentown” by
Jaco Pastorius, “Ish ‘n Us” by members LaBar and Crystal Mannara, and “Pickup
the Pieces” by Average White Band. Jazz Fusion is led by Alan Gaumer, a member
of Moravian College’s adjunct music faculty teaching trumpet and jazz.
Jazz Combo I is an 8 member ensemble the provides students the opportunity
to stretch out and explore their own improvisational skills, develop the skills and
tools of communication (aural and visual) that is necessary in a group, and help the
student expand their repertoire of jazz tunes. It’s goal is to allow students
to experiment and explore within a small band. This year, the Moravian students are
joined by Jason DiPalma, a drummer from the Lehigh Valley Performing Arts High School.
Jazz Fusion is dedicated to learning and performing the fusion style of music, a mixture
of jazz and rock. It currently has 9 members.
