Moravian College to Showcase Talented Students with Scholars Day

Bethlehem, Pa., April 26, 2006— Moravian College will hold the inaugural “Student Scholars Day” on Thursday, April 27, in Prosser Auditorium. The program is designed to recognize and to celebrate student research, honors projects, and creative works. The showcase will honor over forty meritorious entries by students representing ten different areas of selective studies.

Dr. Susan Studds, chair of the Academic Program Committee, Moravian College Board of Trustees, will deliver the welcome address at 9 a.m. in Prosser Auditorium, Haupert Union Building. Throughout the day, students will interact with oral presentations and performances in Prosser Auditorium; and student posters will be displayed in the atrium of the Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex. Students will be available to talk about their posters between 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.

“Given all the undergraduate research (SOAR, Honors, etc.) at Moravian, we needed to create a public forum to showcase the student accomplishments,” said Diane Husic, professor of biology, and co-creator of student scholars day. “There are many models of such events that are used by many institutions to highlight and celebrate student research and original creative works. It is a way to bring the campus together, to further develop a culture of scholarship across disciplines, and to applaud (and learn about) the diverse talents of our students.”

“With the generous donation by Mrs. Hurd to establish the Rokke Endowment to further our collaborative student-faculty research efforts, it seems like the perfect impetus to develop Moravian College’s own version of such an event, an in fact, this inaugural event is dedicated to Mrs. Hurd in appreciation of her contributions to student scholarship,” Husic added.

The academic departments represented are: biology, biochemistry, physics, English, political science, sociology, music, history, computer science and psychology. The afternoon session also will include performances by student members of the Moravian College Dancers.
