Bethlehem, Pa., August 23, 2006—Jazz trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis
will perform at Moravian College on Friday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Foy Concert
Hall. Marsalis and his ensemble will present selections from his latest CD, Minions Dominion.
He also will conduct a master class on Friday at 10:30 a.m. to offer a performance critiques
and of area musicians, while providing insight into the techniques that made him a jazz
great.
The younger brother of jazz greats Wynton and Branford Marsalis, and son of legendary
Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo is considered to be one of the freshest modern voices on the
trombone, was born in New Orleans on July 28, 1965. He began studying trombone at age
13, and attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts high school. He was classically
trained at the Eastern Music Festival and Tanglewood Institute. In 1983, he performed
Gordon Jacob’s Trombone Concerto with the New Orleans Philharmonic and received
the Outstanding Performance Award from the Jefferson Performing Arts Society for his
presentation of Marcello’s Sonata #6. After producing his first recording
at age 17, Marsalis attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music, majoring in both
performance and audio production. He has since produced over 75 major-label recordings,
several of which have received Grammy awards and nominations.
Marsalis has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art
Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach, as well as touring
with his own modern jazz ensemble. He has released two solo albums to critical acclaim,
Pontius Pilate’s
Decision in 1992 and Musashi in 1997 and is a mainstay on the New Orleans modern jazz
scene. Marsalis recently obtained an MA in jazz performance at the University of Louisville.
His third solo CD, Minions’ Dominion will be released in September and be accompanied
by a nationwide tour.
General admission is $20; $15 for seniors; $10 for students and children
12 & under.
The public is welcome to attend the master class; admission is $10. Foy Concert Hall
is located on Moravian College’s Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus, at the corner of
