News Release
August 2006
Bethlehem, Pa., Friday, August 31, 2006—Family members and friends of Moravian
College students are invited to experience Moravian College campus life on Saturday,
September 16, during the College’s annual Family Day fall celebration. Events begin
at the HUB Kiosk with registration and a morning "coffee session," when students and
their families can meet with student affairs staff.
Families will be welcomed by Moravian College’s new president, Dr. Christopher
M. Thomforde, in the HUB Pavilion at 9:30 a.m. Family Day participants may then choose
to attend two of four sessions on campus-related topics. Dr. Michelle Schmidt will coordinate “Back
to the Future: Psychology 101,” an interactive session regarding memory. Participant
may test their own memories in addition to learning about memory loss and retrieval.
Jennifer Creamer, director of international studies, will present “Study Abroad
101 for Parents,” an explanation of opportunities for students of all majors
to study abroad. She will address why studying abroad is such a critical and exciting
part of the liberal arts educational experience.
Dr. Francis Ryan of the history department will offer parents a chance to take a trip
back to the classroom for a visit to the American West. Participants will explore questions
such as why so many settlers moved west after the Civil War, what they found upon arrival,
and how the settlement of the West is understood and remembered today. Through film clips,
short readings, and discussions, topics will be addressed as they would be in History
114: U.S. History since 1865.
“Poke Me! A Parent’s Guide to Facebook,” facilitated
by Timothy Poirier, assistant dean of student life, explains the positive and negative
aspects of the popular student networking website.
At 11 a.m. families also will have the option of attending Moravian’s
first game in the Volleyball Tri-Match against rival Muhlenberg College. The match takes
place in the college’s Timothy Briedegam Field house. The lady Greyhounds will
also challenge Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham campus at 3 p.m.
Lunch will be served as part of a pre-game tailgating party from
11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Academic Complex patio. The
Moravian College marching band and cheerleaders will perform to foster school spirit as the football team
prepares to take on King’s College. The game starts at 1 p.m. at Rocco Calvo
Field at the Steel Field Complex.
From 2 to 4 p.m., families may stop by the HUB Pavilion to learn crafts such
as scrapbooking and knitting while indulging in a chocolate fountain. Movie fans
are invited to view the recent Jack Black release “Nacho Libre” in Prosser
Auditorium. Tours of historic Bethlehem and shopping excursions also are planned for
the afternoon.
Following the football game, all are invited to a Mass in Borhek
Chapel. The day will end with a “Broadway Comes to Bethlehem” dinner
buffet in the HUB dining room. A variety of cuisine will be served while diners are
treated to performances by members of the Footlights Musical Theater Company, a student
musical group.
