Bethlehem, Pa., September 25, 2006—Moravian College announces the 2006 annual
homecoming weekend to be held during Thursday, October 12 to Sunday, October 14. Homecoming
Weekend activities include the Alumni Speakers Program; the 15th Annual Rocco Calvo Invitational
Alumni Golf Tournament; the 7th Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony; the 1st Annual Greek Reunion
Barbeque; and the Homecoming football game.
Homecoming events begin on Thursday, October 12, at 7:00 p.m. with
the Alumni Speaker Program at 4:00 p.m. in the Collier Hall of Science. Ryan Mehl ’96, Ph.D.,
assistant professor of chemistry, Franklin & Marshall College, will present Improving
Evolution with Intelligent Design: Unnatural Amino Acids in Proteins. At 7:00
p.m., environmentalist and activist, Dr. Bruce Coull ’64, professor and dean emeritus,
School of the Environment, University of South Carolina, will present Human/Environment
Interactions: Ethics for a Sustainable Future. Both talks are sponsored by
the Moravian College Alumni Association, the Environmental Coalition, and the Office
of Student Activities.
The 15th Annual Rocco Calvo Invitational Alumni Golf Tournament is
scheduled for Friday, October 13 at Locust Valley Golf Club. Registration ($75) is
at 9:00 a.m.; and tee-off is set at 10 a.m. The registration fee covers greens fees, a cart, prizes, and
lunch provided by Potts’ Doggie Shop.
On Friday evening, the 7th Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony will be
held at 7:30 p.m. in Peter Hall, located on the Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus. The distinguished
recipients are Bruce Coull ‘64; Henry May ’60, ’65 M.Div.; Robert Gratz ‘75,
Ryan Mehl ‘96, and Brian Corvino ‘02.
Coull will be honored with the 2006 Comenius Alumni Award, the Moravian
College Alumni Association’s highest honor in recognition of the recipient’s
lifetime achievement in a chosen field of work. May will receive the Haupert Humanitarian
Award for his outstanding service in the cause of human welfare. Gratz will be presented
with the Benigna Education Award for his achievements in the field of education. Mehl
will be the recipient of the Young Alumni Achievement Award for his professional success
since graduating from Moravian College. Corvino will be recognized by the Emerging
Leader Award, given to a recent alumnus or alumna for dedicated service and leadership
to the college.
On Saturday, October 14, the Business and Economics and Psychology departments will
each host a brunch from10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the History Department will offer
coffee and donuts during open house from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Saturday’s schedule includes the First Annual Greek Reunion Barbeque to be held
from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. under the Greek reunion tent on Colonial Hall lawn
for AEPi, APO, BETA, OGO, Phi Mu, Pi Mu, Sigma Theta Chi, Sigma Tau Delta, SPO, and TKE
fraternities and sororities.
Kick-off time between the Moravian College Greyhounds and Fairleigh
Dickinson University is at 1:00 p.m. at the Rocco Calvo Field. Homecoming will offer a number of opportunities
for alumni to congregate in the Locust Street parking lots, just two blocks from the
football field. A Kidsfest area featuring a moonbounce, arts, crafts, and varied
activities will be set-up for children accompanied by an adult. Reservations required
to park in the tailgate area.
Reunions of the graduate classes of 2000 through 2006 will gather at the new Starters
Riverport restaurant for a special Post Game Happy Hour. The cost ($20) includes shuttle
services, two drinks and appetizer.
In the evening, Moravian College president Dr. Christopher Thomforde will host an Alumni
of Color Reception from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Atrium, located in the Priscilla
Payne Hurd Academic Building.
The classes of 1981, 1986, 1991, and 1996 will reunion under tents set-up on the Houndfest field.
If inclement weather prevails, or if the practice field is wet, Houndfest may
