Bethlehem, Pa., September 26, 2006— In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month,
the Moravian College Office of Institutional Diversity and Political Science Department
will sponsor a presentation by Enrique Morones, president and founder of Border Angels,
a volunteer group that leaves necessities at desert border areas to aid migrants. His
lecture will focus on “the truth about migrant workers” and his work with
Border Angels. It will take place in Moravian’s Prosser Auditorium on Thursday,
September 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Morones was born
in San Diego to Mexican immigrant parents. He founded Border Angels in 1986 to
try to save the lives of migrant workers. He is also a founder of Gente Unida,
a coalition of 65 human rights groups dedicated to stopping the efforts of the vigilante
group The Minuteman Project, Inc. Morones has spoken throughout the United States
and on various television shows in the United States and abroad to raise awareness of
the conditions of migrant workers. He has debated Bill O’Reilly, Lou Dobbs,
and founders of The Minuteman Project. Morones’ most recent undertaking was
the National March for Migrants, which led 111 vehicles from San Diego to Washington,
D.C. in order to protest HR 4437.
Hispanic Business
Magazine has deemed Morones one of the 100 Most Influential Latinos in the USA. He
has also been named a Frontline Human Rights international award recipient for his
lifelong commitment to human rights causes.
Morones’ speech
is free and open to the public. Prosser Auditorium is part of Moravian’s
Haupert Union Building, located at the corner of Monocacy and Locust Streets in Bethlehem.
