Bethlehem, Pa., October 9, 2006— Dr. Frances
Hesselbein, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Leader to Leader Institute, (formerly
the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management), will present “Leading
in a New Century, a New World,” on Friday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m. in Prosser
Auditorium at Moravian College. The title of the lecture is excerpted from the
third part of her latest book, Hesselbein on Leadership.
A recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Moravian College
in 2000, Hesselbein serves in the nonprofit and private corporate sectors, including
the Veteran’s
Corporation Advisory Board, Mutual of America Life Insurance Company, N.Y., and the Boards
of the Center for Social Initiative, Harvard Business School, and the Hauser Center for
Nonprofit Management at the Kennedy School. She is Chairman of the national board
of directors for the Volunteers of America, and has been described “as a pioneer
for women, diversity and inclusion.” Her dedication and accomplishments have
garnered many accolades including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States
of America’s highest civilian honor, awarded in 1998 in recognition of her leadership
as Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts, U.S.A., and as founding president of the Drucker
Foundation. As CEO, Hesselbein is credited with the transformation of the Girl
Scouts organization into an effective management structure with a strategic vision for
the 21st century.
Hesselbein and General Eric K. Shinseki co-authored Be, Know, Do: Leadership
the Army Way in 2004. She is the Editor-in Chief of the quarterly journal Leader
to Leader, and co-editor of a book with the same name. One of the three
volumes co-authored for the Drucker Foundation Future Series, The Leader of the
Future, has been translated into sixteen languages, and she has writing credits
for nineteen other publications in multiple languages.
Her career has been distinguished by the appointment to two Presidential commissions
on community service by President Bush; the Legion of Honor Gold Medallion from the Chapel
of the Four Chaplains; the Distinguished Alumni Fellows Award from the University of
Pittsburg; the International ATHENA Award; the Henry A. Rosso Medal for Lifetime Achievement
in Ethical Fund Raising; the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Security Series Award; the
Juliette Award from the Girl Scouts of U.S.A.; and the Visionary Award from the American
Society of Association Executives Foundation and many other honors.
The presentation,
sponsored by the college’s Leadership Center, is free and open to the public. Prosser
Auditorium is located in Moravian’s Haupert Union Building, at the corner of Monocacy
and Locust Streets in Bethlehem.
