News Release
October 2006
Bethlehem, Pa., October 13, 2006— The world-renowned Auryn
String Quartet will perform at Moravian College on Friday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m.
in Foy Concert Hall. A reception with the artists will be held following the concert.
The German-based group’s appearance is sponsored by the Chamber Music Society
of Bethlehem.
The Auryn String
Quartet is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its formation in Cologne on March 8, 1981
when members—violinists Matthias Lingenfelder and Jens Oppermann, violist Stewart
Eaton, and cellist Andreas Arndt—first practiced together and realized their potential
as an ensemble. They chose the name “Auryn” from the mystical amulet in Michael
Ende’s novel The Neverending Story. Their style was developed by
spending five years in Cologne studying with the Amadeus Quartet, followed by two semesters
at the University of Maryland with the Guarneri Quartet. Since that time, the group
has been playing numerous festivals and concerts in Germany and abroad. The frequent
international tour destinations are the United Kingdom, Italy, Austria, Switzerland,
Canada, and the United States.
In addition to performing,
each member of the group holds a professorship in the string faculty of the Musikhochschule
in Detmold, Germany. They teach a wide array of chamber music to both resident
and non-resident students. In 2004, the group held a two-week symposium for the
European Academy in Montepulciano.
In their Moravian
concert, the group will perform Haydn’s “String Quartet No. 29 in G major,
Op. 33/5, H. 3/41,” Brahms’ “String Quartet No. 3 in B-flat major,
Op. 67,” and Schubert’s “String Quartet No. 15 in G major, Op. 161,
D. 887.”
The Auryn String Quartet has produced more than 20 albums, including The Auryn Series,
a four-volume collection of Beethoven’s string quartets.
Tickets for the performance
range from $5 to $25, depending on location. Foy Hall is part of the College’s
Priscilla Payne Hurd Campus, located at the corner of Main and Church Streets in Bethlehem.
