June Bright Reese ’43 wrote, “We regret to note the passing of Marian Carty Durkee on March 2, 2010. She was a member of the Secretarial Class of 1941 and faithfully attended class and college events. She is survived by three daughters, Janice Parry, Judith Burton, and Christine Simpson, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Jackson Leland Durkee. The Class extends deepest sympathy to her family.
It is with deep sorrow that the college class of 1943 notes the death of Grace Shaner Schuchardt on March 19th, 2010. Grace faithfully kept in touch with members of her class. She is survived by her husband, Lee Schuchardt, three sons Frank, Jonathan and Benjamin, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Our sincere sympathy is extended to her family.
Both Marian and Grace are greatly missed.”

My faithful correspondent, Ruth Balish, sent me a note about her recent events, some of which are rather difficult—had a hip replacement in March and her arthritis is not helping. We all seem to be getting older, more achy, stiffer in the joints, etc. We all hope and pray that Ruth’s health improves and her husband keeps well at 92. Ruth lives in Barnegat, NJ.

Thelma Scheifele Heiberger is happily living with her daughter Roberta in Virginia, and is having some problems with eyesight and hearing, but doing well otherwise. Her grandson Ashley is with the Bethlehem police force and is teaching a course in criminal justice at Moravian. Thelma’s 2 great grandsons, Abraham 18, and Gideon 17, are involved with acting and stage activities at college. Thelma will be celebrating her 90th birthday April 6, and there are many parties in preparation.

Lois Yerger Fischel also lives here in Moravian Village. Her one grandson was in China teaching English for a year and is planning to go back for another year. I’m glad he has had a great experience there. I was teaching English in China for 6 weeks in 1997, and it was a delightful experience. Lois’ son Josh and his wife Cameren are involved with a Camp Program of America organization.

I think this is probably long enough. I’m still here at Moravian Village and we had a big family reunion last weekend of everybody from Kansas, Indiana, and Maine, including the newest members of the family Ian and Cai Saner, and Josiah Eisenhour, all my cute great grandsons, under 3.

Classmates—please send me news of your activities if you want something to read about our class.
