An update from Judith Derk McKendry: I have lived in
Massachusetts since 1972. I retired in 2008 after 31 wonderful years of
teaching math.

I enjoy spending time with my family, and occasionally do some
FaceTime math tutoring for them.

I am busy with volunteer activities such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health), my
Church, and the nonprofit professional development curriculum I developed along with a school
psychologist colleague. The focus of this curriculum is not math, but mental
health. Judy writes that most teachers do not get training on this topic and
"I saw a need among my colleagues." "The Faces of Mental Illness In Your
Classroom" is designed to enable school districts to run their own 12-15 hour
professional development courses for their teachers. The most unique feature
is the inclusion of videos of young adults in recovery sharing their school
experiences. Thus far, three school districts in Massachusetts are using this
curriculum.

Judith also mentions that one of her sons, Joe McKendry, is a well-known
illustrator.  Joe’s work appeared in the October issue of National
Geographic having done the illustrations for Jane Goodall and her family. He
also did work for the Smithsonian, the WWII Memorial, in Washington DC, and
little portraits for Reader's Digest.

Judy writes that she is hoping spring is just around the corner in New
England. By the time our Alumni magazine goes to press we know better weather
will be here for all in the great Northeast!

Notes from Kathie:  It was a wonderful 50th reunion for the class of ’67.  Those attending were: Betsey Anthony Brown and Dick Anthony, Maggie Morgan Blanda and Ray Blanda, Julianne Pesola Cassady, Dick Chaiet, Gary and Donna DeFulvio, Rev. Dr.  Dick and Susan Ditterline, Wayne Dovan and Carol Morrow Dovan ’68, Bill and Judy Oravec Farquer, Mary Ann Mikitka Fritz and Jack Fritz, Syd and Joyce Goldberg, Martha Dodge Griffis and Jeff Griffiis ’75, Gary and Loraine Henry, Alan Herd, Christina Grigg Martin, Barbara Worsley Morgan, DMD and Jim Morgan, Hank Nehilla, Don and Pat Soltysiak, Roger Hudak ’65 also happened to join us for dinner.

Arriving early Friday, many class members toured South Campus.  Evening activities included a sincere welcome by President Bryon Grigsby ’90, followed by a wonderful dinner in the HUB.  On Saturday morning we enjoyed brunch in the dining room of the Hotel Bethlehem while being given an update of the all things new at Moravian College.  Moravian is celebrating the 275th Anniversary of its founding.  Conversation before we adjourned left us feeling that we enjoyed our time together and all reiterated how proud we were to be a part of this wonderful College and our years spent on its Campus.

I want to apologize to Dick Chaiet who apparently had written class notes to me and somehow I never got them and they never got published.  Please forgive, Dick.  Also, a huge thank you to those who filled out the survey and I hope to add them to the class notes in the ensuing months for all to enjoy.  If any of you know specifics concerning classmates please check the Moravian College website and offer them for our column at any time.

Betsey Brown Anthony writes:  What a great roommate reunion Lynn Balfour Owens, Priscilla Tonii Hodges, Carol Kriebel Read and I had in January.  Lynn has wanted the three of us to come visit her on lovely Marco Island, Fla., where she spends the winter.  The weather was perfect for sightseeing.  Of course no one has changed and we picked up where we left off 35 years ago-the last time the four of us were together.  We feel blessed to have remained special friends after our college days.

After 31 years of public school teaching Elaine DeReamer Conner has been playing tennis almost non-stop since she retired.  On March 15 she will receive the USTA award at Moravian.  Elaine says, “It is even more exciting for me because I am returning to my alma mater to get the award.”

Elaine DeReamer Connor writes: I have my Masters Degree in English from Lehigh University.  I retired in 2006 after 31 years of teaching.  I was a volunteer at Camp Compass for several years.  I am an avid tennis player and serve as Board Secretary at Oakmont Tennis Club in Allentown, Pa.  I am also a member of Winning Touch Tennis Club.  After becoming a team Middle States champ, I went to Nationals in Indiana Wells, CA, in 2007 with a team from Winning Touch Tennis.  I recently received the 2014 Courage Award from USTA/MS/EPD in March at Moravian.   Along with this I was also presented with a PA Senate Recognition Proclamation.

Rev. Ruth Harris Runkle is a volunteer visitation pastor who gives practical assistance to medically needy adults in the community and she serves her local church as the organist.  Her community service also includes serving the non-profit New Sweden Centre, based in Wilmington, Delaware, as a board member and education consultant.

Alan Herd writes: Our Greyhound tennis teams, up to a few years ago, visited us here on Hilton Head Island for a lively week of collegiate matches.  I never bought more Gatorade in my life, as often both Moravian and Penn State chose the same week to visit.  We would love to see our MoMo teams again.

From Kathie:

I heard from Jeff Richards who writes that he enjoys reading our column and offered an update. Jeff had been a chemistry major and worked with Dr. Collier in the Honors Program. He received a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, followed by a thirty-year career with Pfizer Inc., where he led in the development, defense, and launch of more than twenty human and animal health products. “My Moravian experience prepared me very well,” he said. He added that during that time, he and his wife were blessed with two sons, Jasen and Jonathan, and two daughters, Martha and Maryellen, who are now college graduates with their own families. His five grandchildren are Juliet, Samuel, Lincoln, Lillian, and Ivy. His book about great teamwork, The Principles of Teamwork-Radical Empowerment, was recently published by Trafford Press.

Jeff hoped I would encourage more of you to write … which is certainly nothing new for those of us who meet this deadline throughout the year. One of our classmates asked whether he would get his name in this “society column” after Bethlehem’s Liberty High School Class of 1963 reunion on October 4, when so many of us socialized and danced the night away. I told him “of course you will,” because I always need news. Those attending the reunion along with spouses, significant others, etc., are Moravian classmates Frank Matla, Bob Check, Kerry Beidleman, Syd Goldberg, Gary DeFulvio, Connie Urschitz Gilbert, George Senick ’72 and me.

For me to continue this “society column,” please send news! Also, if one of you would like to take on this endeavor as class correspondent for a retirement project, please let me or Pat Hanna (PHanna@Moravian.edu) know. I would love to take a break after five years!

I want to add that we are ver proud to have seen my daughter Holly's work on the animated film Coraline over the Christmas holiday at a local movie theatre. She worked on the fild over a two year period in Portland, Oregon. She ws teh secon assistant editor and the film received four strs from the reviewers nationally.
