Athletics and Recreation
The mission of the Department of Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation is to support the aims of the institution by providing physical education and sports programs, facilities, and equipment for the various levels of interest and skill in the College community. Moravian supports a broad range of physical activities intended for participation by the entire community, from the highly skilled, experienced athlete to the interested novice or casual spectator. The program offers opportunities in intercollegiate, intramural, and recreational competition. Schedules and information are available in Johnston Hall or on the College website.
Intercollegiate athletics programs are offered for those students interested in organized competition at the varsity level. Moravian is a Division III (non-scholarship) member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Centennial Conference for football, the Empire 8 Conference for golf, and the Landmark Conference for other sports. Admission to athletic events is free to students with Moravian ID cards. Varsity competition is offered in football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, track and field, tennis, and golf for men; and basketball, field hockey, tennis, track and field, softball, volleyball, cross-country, soccer, and cheerleading for women.
The intramural sports program provides competition among members of campus organizations, residence halls, and student groups. Intramural sports include volleyball, soccer, touch football, indoor soccer, floor hockey, softball, beach volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. Tournaments are held for tennis, golf, and dodge ball. Other special programs are added to the schedule when a demonstrated interest exists.
Johnston Hall, Breidegam Field House, and the Steel Field gym are facilities for indoor athletics. Recreation time is set aside for the exclusive use of students, faculty, and staff. Breidegam Field House features an indoor track and a fitness center, as well as a dance and aerobics studio. Johnston Hall features, in addition to the main gym, a power weight room, a movement room, a conference room, and a classroom. Student admission to all athletics and recreation facilities requires a student ID card.
Facilities for varsity athletics, intramural activities, and recreational activities include Johnston Hall gym, Timothy Breidegam Field House, Betty Prince Field, and the Steel Field Athletics Complex.
