Rev. Dr. Hillary Dowling Raining writes: I have some good news that I am pleased to share with you all. I have had my first book published that has its roots in the research that I did while working towards my DMin at Drew University. The book is called “Joy in Confession”.  I have included a brief description:

Reconciliation is one of the most beautiful and life-changing gifts that Jesus offers us—it is also one of the most misunderstood. Joy in Confession combines art therapy, scholarship, theology, and worship to create a powerful experience for learning about confession in the Episcopal Church.

In this accessible, user-friendly workbook, author Hillary D. Raining provides compelling evidence of transformation for individuals and communities who embrace reconciliation as a spiritual practice. The workbook includes a robust toolbox for clergy, congregations, individuals, including insight on what to expect during confession, how to incorporate confession into the life of a congregation, and how to hear a confession. In addition, the workbook offers resources to tailor the program for weekly study sessions, a retreat, or a one-day workshop. The program has been tried and tested by congregations around the U.S., and their suggestions have been incorporated to make Joy in Confession a helpful resource for any setting.

The Rite of Reconciliation holds a key to grace and an invitation from God to live with joy as a people of a resurrected hope-if we would but answer the call.

Regina LaCaruba ’05 is working in the Gulf Coast on the clean up from the BP Gulf oil spill. She wrote that the Mississippi Canyon incident (BP Gulf Oil Spill) is unparalleled in the scope of its potential geographic impact. Marine and estuarine ecosystems from Texas to Florida are being assessed to support the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process established by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990. Response efforts she has been involved in include submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) sampling which is oil screening for submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) anchored sentinels to determine the concentration/source of oil compounds in Gulf seagrasses and estuaries.

SAV is directly important to ecological function, as it provides food and habitat, maintains water quality, and protects shorelines from erosion. Project framework includes pre-assessment, restoration planning and implementation. She also does plankton sampling and has also worked onboard an offshore vessel for a few weeks at a time, performing zooplankton, larval fish and decapod collection sampling by means of CTD scans, “bongo”, and neuston netting at 25m and 200m. Oil screening, biomass measurement and copepod mortality analyses can provide valuable insight to assessing oil spill impacts. Responsibilities also included compiling all day-shift sampling data and preparing it for laboratory analysis.

From the Alumni House:

Heather McGarvie Corey’s art will be displayed in a solo exhibition at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J. this September.  Paper and its potential as a medium sparked Heather’s attention at Moravian. Alongside artist Doug Zucco, she practiced Western and Eastern traditions of papermaking and pulled sheets from cooked vegetable fibers such as cotton, daylily, and hemp.  She furthered her discipline at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (MFA) and investigated paper as the subject rather than the surface.
Her recent exhibitions and experiences include: Catalog for Tokyo Juried Art Exhibition, Ozu Washi Gallery and Oji Paper Museum, Tokyo, Japan (2009); Dieu Donné Papermill, Inc. Workspace, New York, NY (2008); and Paper Collaboration, Haystack Mountain School of Craft, Deer Isle, ME (2007).
As she breaks down a plant into its fibrous form, she reconstitutes its make-up to reflect how she sees it in nature. Plants on Paper incorporates old papermaking traditions with cast paper sculptures and printmaking techniques.  Abaca, a Philippine banana stem fiber, is her fiber of choice because of its versatility.  Beating time softens this fiber which creates a pulp that can be cast in low or high relief.  Pulp is then layered and impressed to form basic organic shapes. Afterwards, these dried pieces are assembled and painted. Lace paper and silk flowers are used in an overlay, and stitching is used to enhance interlocking compositions and forms of foliage.

Artists Murray Dessner, Betsy Miraglia, and Doug Zucco have influenced her discovery of the exclusivity of paper. Drawing upon their expertise, she continues to tailor her working practices.
