Title of project: Flow Profile of Radial Hydraulic Jump
Abstract or brief description: The radial or circular hydraulic jump is a common topic discussed and studied in the field of fluid dynamics. A hydraulic jump occurs when there is an instantaneous discontinuity in the depth of the fluid due to the velocity field. This instantaneous increase in the fluid’s depth is largely due to the viscous nature of the fluid. In this study the free surface profile of the jump was examined so that the depth of the fluid could be analyzed as a function of position from the center of the jump. In addition to the free surface profile, other physical parameters of the jump were studied, such as the radius of the jump as a function of both the flow rate and the angular frequency of the jump stage.
How did you get interested in your topic? I did a short independent study on a similar topic my junior year and became interested in fluids.
Do you intend to research your topic further, if so, how? The hydraulic jump is a fundamental idea in fluid mechanics and shows up in a variety of forms in different experiments. I plan on studying fluid mechanics in graduate school so in some way or form I will come across the hydraulic jump again.
How did you benefit academically by conducting research/participating in honors? Completing an honors research project improved my ability to problem solve and work hard to understand challenging topics.
How has the department in which you studied prepared you for the future? The physics department at Moravian has prepared me extremely well for graduate school. The small size of the department allows for a lot of teacher student interaction. My physics professors have passed on a lot of experience and knowledge to me that will be helpful in graduate school.
What advice do you have for other students interested in honors? Despite the amount of time and effort I put into my project, doing research as an undergraduate is extremely important especially if you plan on going to graduate school. I would highly recommend doing a honors project to younger students who want to challenge themselves and prepare themselves for graduate school.
