Title of project: East German Privatization Process during the German Unification
Abstract or brief description: The purpose of this paper is to explain the impact of the privatization process on the German economy and society. The main question is whether the German unification process was the reason behind the current imbalance between Eastern and Western regions of Germany. After analyzing the history, structure and function of Germany’s privatization agency, I examined several specific privatization cases in order to evaluate the reasons for social dissatisfaction with the economic transition of the country. I concluded that the privatization process has failed to integrate the two German societies and balance out their economies.
How did you get interested in your topic? I wanted to do research between both of my majors, and I got my inspiration from my experiences during my study abroad.
Do you intend to research your topic further? If so, how? My project focused on evaluation of the past process, which I found had a great impact on the current state of the country's regions. It would be interesting for me to do an analysis of recent/current trends in the country's development.
How did you benefit academically by conducting research/participating in honors? I feel like I was more organized and professional when working on my other projects besides honors. Also it helps a lot when writing papers. They all seem so short and easy in comparison!
How has the department (or faculty advisor) prepared you for the future? My advisors were great mentors and worked with me every step of my way. They gave me valuable advice on writing professional academic papers, and on researching and presenting my ideas.
What advice do you have for other students interested in honors? Start early and stick to your work schedule. You know your topic more than a year in advance, so there is plenty of time for research and writing, that is, if you manage your time properly. Also, it is important to find a good study space without any distraction, so you can work there several hours at a time.
