Title of project: Healthy Sexuality: Developing a Sex Addiction Prevention Program for Teens
Abstract or brief description: The characteristics and etiology of sex addiction were covered, along with information on why teens specifically are vulnerable to developing an addiction to sex. Current prevention programs available for drug and alcohol abuse, as well as HIV/AIDS prevention were examined for best practices. The principles behind these programs were used to develop the first known sex addiction prevention program for teenagers. This program, Healthy Sexuality, is broken down and discussed by session, and the necessary steps for implementing such a program are covered.
How did you get interested in your topic? Through my internship at the Lehigh Valley Hospital, as well as conversations with my advisor.
Do you intend to research your topic further, if so, how? Yes. I will hopefully be presenting my work at a conference in Boston during the Fall. In addition, I would like to add to the worksheets I have already developed for the program and construct the entire workbook that would be used by the teens.
How did you benefit academically by conducting research/participating in honors? My researching skills increased dramatically, and through the process I became better at individual learning. In addition, my organizational writing skills improved.
How has the department in which you studied prepared you for the future? The psychology department has enabled me to be skilled in academic research, which should help me in my graduate studies. In addition, gathering an understanding about teens is increasingly useful for my current job as a Therapeutic Support Staff providing therapy to teens.
What advice do you have for other students interested in honors? Talk with professors in your academic area of interest, and brainstorm as many ideas as possible. Through the process, you may find yourself coming up with ideas that are new and exciting, which will help you stay interested and passionate about your project.
