Title: Synthesis of Potential Metal chelating Derivatives of Azulene
Abstract: This study covers several attempted syntheses utilizing both azulene and guaziaulene to generate a molecular indicator. The use of an already established azulene-EDTA synthesis with guaiazulene as starting material was unsuccessful, with the reduction step being incomplete. An alternative synthesis was chosen utilizing succinic acid as a model compound for iminodiacetic acid. Successful reaction conditions for this path could not be established, and products of performed reactions were discovered to only be unreacted starting materials.
How did you get interested in your topic? I became interested in this topic when I learned about the azulene molecule and its striking blue color. It was different, so it was interesting.
Do you intend to research your topic further, if so, how? I'd like to research the azulenes further. Hopefully as I move on to industry I'll have the resources and the opportunity to look further into this project.
How did you benefit academically by conducting research/participating in honors? Participating in honor's research has helped immensely by giving me valuable research experience and the opportunity to do what I love. It has also allowed me to develop skills such as public speaking that I can apply to various other areas.
What advice do you have for other students interested in honors? My advice to students considering an honors project is to find an advisor who is passionate about their research but is willing to allow the student to follow their own ideas.
