Pat Parenty '80
President, L'Oreal USA Professional Products Division
"I can remember my business law professor introducing me to the concept of humans being the 'X factor' in business. He was really right!"
From time to time, executives sitting in financial meetings for the L'Oreal USA Professional Products Division will get a lesson from Moravian when their division president, Pat Parenty '80, quotes his former professors.
"Many of the basic beliefs I learned in college apply to my work and personal life today," says Parenty. "I still use some quotes I remember from Moravian teachers. One of my favorites came from my intermediate accounting professor who said that from an accounting practice perspective, 'If you think you're right, you're wrong.'"
Overseeing the long-term strategic development and day-to-day operations for the nine brands and distribution company that comprise the Professional Products Division -- Kerastase, Shu Uemura Art of Hair, Mizani, L'Oreal Professionnel, Redken, Pureology, Matrix, Essie nail products, L'Oreal Technique, and SalonCentric -- can be daunting, but Parenty is up to the task. He never loses sight of his division's philosophy to create quality products that help salon professionals excel at their craft, and that's another lesson he can trace back to Moravian.
"The first couple years, the faculty helped me move in a direction I really enjoyed, business management," recalls Parenty. "Many of the professors and deans helped me clarify my own beliefs and provided excellent advice and direction once I chose my major. I can remember my business law professor James Ravelle, [professor of sociology, law, and public management], introducing me to the concept of humans being the 'X factor' in business. He was really right!"
Developing the team and its individuals is among the most rewarding parts of his career. L'Oreal conducts extensive educational programs to expand technical, business, and leadership skills. It's an industry that can't survive without people and their creativity.
"It's very rewarding to know our efforts can help develop the salons and salon professionals that support our company through product purchase," he says. "And to know that we are helping to positively evolve our industry makes my job personally rewarding."
