            BETHLEHEM, PA --- The third seeded Catholic University of America baseball team won its third Landmark Conference Championship in the four-year history of the conference with a 14-9 victory over second seed The University of Scranton in the championship game of the 2011 Landmark Conference Tournament hosted by Moravian College at Gillespie Field Monday afternoon.
            The Cardinals earn the conference automatic berth to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament and will find out on Monday, May 16th where they will play in the tournament.
            Scranton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Senior outfielder Chris Stallone (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield HS) led off with a single and scored from first base on an RBI double down the right field line by sophomore third baseman Richard Pohl (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere HS) with Stallone beating the throw to the plate.  Senior catcher Jeff Manahan (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown HS) followed with an RBI single that scored Pohl.
            Catholic answered in the bottom half of the first.  Senior shortstop LJ Travaglia (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) led off with a double while junior outfielder Dan Sullivan (Beltsville, MD/DeMatha HS) walked.  Sophomore designated hitter Chris McCloud (Fairfax Station, VA/Robinson Secondary HS) then connected on a three-run homer to left field, his sixth home run of the year.  After a walks to junior outfielder Matt Grieb (Garrett Park, MD/St. Alban’s HS) and junior first baseman Dave Grear (Runnemede, NJ.Paul VI HS) and a pitching change, freshman third baseman Marc Hanna (Bloomfield, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep HS) connected on an RBI single to score Grieb.  After Scranton recorded the first out of the inning, sophomore catcher Mark Kalokitis (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert HS) hit an RBI single that scored Grear
            In the top of the second, Stallone would pick up an infield single for his 200th career hit but the Royals were unable to cut into Catholic’s lead.
            The Cardinals added six runs to their lead in the bottom of the fourth for an 11-2 edge.  Travaglia and Sullivan drew walks to start the inning and McCloud singled to load the bases.  Grieb connected on a two-RBI single to score Travaglia and Sullivan, and Grear hit a single to reload the bases.  Hanna then hit a two-RBI single to score McCloud and Grieb.  After a pair of outs, junior second baseman Tim Mierzwa (Laurel, MD/Resevoir HS) hit a two-RBI double to score Grear and Hanna.
            Scranton scored twice in the top fifth inning to cut the lead to 11-4.  Pohl reached on an error to start the inning, and senior first baseman David Giglio (Wallingford, CT/Xavier HS) hit a one-out, two-run homer to left field, Giglio’s ninth home run of the season.
            The Royals scored four more times in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-8.  Manahan led off with a walk before back-to-back singles from Giglio and senior outfielder Jason Lane (Moosic, PA/Riverside HS) loaded the bases with no outs for the Royals.  Sophomore outfielder Michael Gaeta (Canford, NJ/Cranford HS) then connected on a three-RBI double to right center field to empty the bases.  Gaeta would move to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior designated hitter Jesse Outhouse (Croton Falls, NY/North Salem HS), and he scored on an RBI ground out by junior second baseman Matt Rayha (Willow Street, PA/Penn Manor HS)
            Catholic would get two of the runs back in the bottom half of the seventh to push the lead to 13-8.  Grieb led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single before Grear connected on a two-run homer to left field, his fourth home run of the season. 
            Scranton scored once in the top of the eighth to make the score 13-9 Catholic.  Stallone and senior pinch hitter Chris Velazquez (Pomona, NY/Albertus Magnus HS) hit back-to-back infield singles to start the inning, and Giglio had an RBI ground out to score Stallone.
            Mierzwa singled to lead off the bottom half of the eighth inning, and he eventually score on an RBI single from McCloud to push the Cardinals lead to 14-9.
            Scranton ended up with a 17-16 edge in hits with Stallone going four-for-six with two runs.  Giglio was three-for-five with three RBIs and two runs while sophomore shortstop Tim LeCompte (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic HS) was also three-for-five.  Rayha was two-for-five while Gaeta had three RBIs.  For Catholic, McCloud was three-for-five with four RBIs and two runs while Hanna went three-for-five with three RBIs.  Grieb was two-for-three with three runs and two RBIs while Grear was two-for-four with three runs and two RBIs.  Mierzwa went two-for-four with a pair of RBIs while Kalokitis was two-for-five.
            Freshman Robin Mowatt (Rockville, MD/Walter Johnson HS) earned the win for Catholic, allowing four runs, three earned on ten hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in six innings of action.  Freshman Thomas Travaglia (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) earned the save with three runs on six hits with a strikeout in three innings of action.
            Sophomore Matt Mosko (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough HS) took the loss for Scranton, allowing five runs on two hits and three walks while facing just five batters as the first of six Royal pitchers in the game.
