BETHLEHEM, PA --- Freshman pitcher Jenna Carmon (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central HS) hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning to cap a three-run inning as the top seed and host Moravian College softball team earned a 4-3, 11-inning victory over second seed Susquehanna University Saturday afternoon to advance to the 2009 Landmark Conference Tournament Championship game.
The Greyhounds, the defending Landmark Conference Champion, will play in the championship round on Sunday, May 3rd beginning at 12:00 p.m. needing just one victory for the team’s ninth straight conference championship.  Susquehanna will play again at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the final elimination game before the championship round.
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning.  Junior outfielder Deanna Anderson (Coal Township, PA/Shamokin Area HS) led off by reaching on a Moravian throwing error.  A sacrifice bunt from freshman outfielder Lauren Finizio (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills HS) moved Anderson to second base, and sophomore designated player Brennan Belfour (Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth HS) followed with an RBI single to score Anderson.
Moravian responded in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3.  Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Falzarano (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield HS) drew a one-out walk and moved to second when senior designated player Maria DeBonis (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame HS) reached on an error with two outs.  Senior first baseman Sheri Bieniek (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley HS) followed with an RBI single down the left field line to score Falzarano.
The contest would remain tied through the next seven innings until the 11th.  Moravian had two chances to win the game, leaving the bases loaded in both the fifth and seventh innings while Susquehanna had two runners on in the top of the eighth.
Susquehanna scored twice in the top of the 11th for a 3-1 lead.  Senior first baseman Laurie Blaszka (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional HS) reached on an error to lead off the inning, and junior catcher Kelli Holota (Spring Lake, NJ/Livingston HS) hit an infield single.  Sophomore third baseman Shelly Landis (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock HS) ripped a two-RBI double off the right center field fence to score Blaszka and Holota to put the Crusaders ahead.
The Greyhounds would answer with three runs in the bottom of the 11th for the win.  Falzarano led off with a single, and after an out, DeBonis singled.  Bieniek followed with a two-RBI double to right center field, scoring Falzarano and DeBonis and Bieniek ended up at third on the throw home.  Junior Katie Flood (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville HS) came in to run for Bieniek, and Carmon hit a flare single to right field.  Flood had to hold at third to make sure the ball dropped, and she slid home before the throw from right field reached the plate for the winning run.
The victory was Moravian’s second this season in six extra inning games, and it was also the Greyhounds’ fifth win in 11 one-run games this spring.
Moravian had a 12-10 edge I hits with DeBonis and Bieniek each going four-for-five.  Bieniek had three RBIs while Falzarano was two-for-five with two runs scored.  Holata was three-for-five to lead Susquehanna while senior outfielder Gretchen Halsey (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville HS) and sophomore shortstop Taylor Crawford (Matamoras, PA/Delaware Valley HS) each had two hits for the Crusaders.
Carmon won her 11th straight decision in the circle for the Greyhounds, improving to 13-1 after allowing three runs, just one earned, on ten hits and no walks to go with five strikeouts.  Sophomore Cara Swerdlow (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield HS) dropped to 15-8 in the circle for the Crusaders after giving up four runs, three earned on 12 hits and six walks while striking out six batters.
