MORAVIAN TO INDUCT SEVEN INTO ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
CHARLES BARTOLET NAMED HERBSTMAN AWARD WINNER
BETHLEHEM, PA --- Linda Atiyeh (Harrisburg), James Evanko (Nazareth), Richard
Krouse (Phillipsburg, NJ), Rob Light (Naxhaw, NC), David Mittl (Bethlehem), Kurt
Poling (Allentown) and Dan Reichenbach (Allentown) make up the class of 2001
that will be inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, November
2nd.
Also being honored at the 2001 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be Charles Bartolet,
Jr. (Bethlehem) with the Robert Martin Herbstman Award and the 1988 football team.
Atiyeh graduated from Moravian in 1988 and lettered for four seasons in both women's basketball
and softball. She helped the women's basketball team to the Middle Atlantic Conference
Southern Championship and the team's first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 1985-86. Atiyeh,
who scored 1,054 career points, set three Moravian records during her career - game free
throw percentage, season free throw percentage and career free throw percentage. Atiyeh's
numbers were so good that she ranked second in the NCAA in season free throw percentage
and third in career free throw percentage at graduation. On the softball field, Atiyeh
was named a Middle Atlantic Conference First Team All-Star as a senior and she was the
Greyhound's Most Valuable Player the same season. She set school records for hits,
RBIs and assists in a season and hits in a career.
Evanko, a 1955 graduate, played football for the Greyhounds for four years and he was
a member of the baseball team for three seasons at Moravian. He was the football
team's captain in 1954 and he was named an All-Star the same year. Evanko had one
unforgettable afternoon on the gridiron at Wagner College on November 14, 1953 when he
ran for a Moravian record 256 yards, a record which still stands today. Moravian
ended up winning the game 34-19. Evanko is a retired teacher from the Nazareth Area
School District.
Krouse, who finished at Moravian in 1989, was a four-year standout on the football and
track & field teams for Moravian. He helped the Greyhound football squad win
the 1988 Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and earn the school's first NCAA Playoff
appearance the same season. Krouse was a Middle Atlantic Conference Second Team All-Star
as a senior and finished his career with 1,311 yards rushing. In the spring of each
season, Krouse took up throwing the javelin and he became Moravian's first-ever male NCAA
Track & Field qualifier. Krouse was a NCAA Division III All-American in the javelin
as a senior and he was the Middle Atlantic Conference Runner-up as a junior and as a senior. He
helped the Greyhounds to the Middle Atlantic Conference Team Championship in 1989 and he
was team captain the same year. Krouse was also named Moravian's Most Outstanding
Senior Male Athlete in 1989. Krouse resides in Phillipsburg, New Jersey and works
at Piazza Farms & Greenhouses.
Light, who graduated in 1990, starred on the Moravian football and baseball teams for
four years while attending Moravian. He led the Greyhounds to the Middle Atlantic
Conference Championship on the football field in 1988 and on the baseball diamond in 1990. Light
was the Co-Most Valuable Player of the 1988 football squad and he was named a Middle Atlantic
Conference Second Team All-Star. As a senior in 1989, Light was named the Middle
Atlantic Conference All-Star First Team, a Pizza Hut Honorable Mention All-American, the
Middle Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and the team Most Valuable Player. He
was also tabbed as the Football Gazette National Player of the week once during his senior
season. Light set ten school passing records and two Middle Atlantic Conference marks. He
was named Moravian's Co-Most Outstanding Senior Male Athlete in 1990. Light, who
works for Unimin Corporation, resides in Naxhaw, North Carolina.
Mittl, who also graduated in 1990, was a four-year letterwinner on the soccer field and
on the baseball diamond for the Greyhounds. He was twice named a Middle Atlantic
Conference All-Star in soccer and Mittl was the Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division
Soccer Most Valuable Player as a junior. David also earned Regional All-American
honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a junior. When
he completed his soccer career, Mittl ranked in the top five all-time in goals and assists. On
the baseball field, Mittl was a three time Middle Atlantic Conference All-Star. He
was also the Greyhound's team captain and Most Valuable Player as a senior. Mittl
works for B.Braun Medical Inc. and resides in Bethlehem.
Poling, a 1989 graduate of Moravian, was a four-year letterwinner with the football team
and was the squad's co-captain as a senior in 1988. He helped the Greyhounds capture
the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship that same year and also led the squad to its
first NCAA Playoff appearance. Poling, who made 183 career tackles, earned plenty
of honors during his senior season - Pizza Hut Honorable Mention All-American, Football
Gazette Honorable Mention All-American, Middle Atlantic Conference First Team All-Star,
Eastern College Athletic Conference First Team All-Star and the Greyhound's Most Valuable
Player. He was also a Middle Atlantic Conference Honorable Mention All-Star as a
junior. Poling, who works for Prudential Securities and as an assistant coach for
the Greyhounds, resides in Allentown.
Reichenbach, a 1991 graduate, was a member of the Moravian track & field team for
four years. He was a three-time NCAA Division III All-American, twice in the long
jump and once in the high jump. All three All-American finishes came during Reichenbach's
sophomore season with one indoors and two outdoors. Reichenbach was a seven-time
NCAA qualifier and he set the Middle Atlantic Conference record in the long jump and the
Moravian records in the long jump, high jump and triple jump. He was a Middle Atlantic
Conference Champion in the long jump twice, the high jump twice and the triple jump once
during his indoor and outdoor career at Moravian. Reichenbach works for W.S. Reichenbach & Son,
Inc. and resides in Allentown.
Bartolet, a 1960 graduate, was a three-year letterwinner on the football team and he earned
two letters as a member of the baseball and wrestling squads. He was a member of
the first intercollegiate wrestling team at Moravian and with a second place finish in
the heavyweight division at the 1958 Middle Atlantic Wrestling Conference, Bartolet became
the first medal winner in school history. Bartolet served as captain of the wrestling
team during his junior year and was very active in the campus life at Moravian. He
was a member of the Varsity "M" Club for four years and served as the vice-president his
junior year and as president during his senior year. Bartolet worked for 36 years
in the Saucon Valley School District as a teacher and assistant principal. He was
head wrestling coach for 25 years and assistant football coach for 14 years.
The 1988 football team posted an overall record of 10-2, won the Middle Atlantic Conference
Championship and was the first Moravian football team to earn a berth in the NCAA Division
III Playoffs.
