MORAVIAN GETS ECAC BID, HOSTS GROVE CITY WEDNESDAY
CENTERVILLE, MA --- For the first time since the 1990 season, the Moravian College men's
soccer team will be competing in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic Championships. The
Greyhounds are seeded fourth in the six-team tournament and will host fifth seed Grove
City College at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 7th on the Moravian Quad.
Moravian, which has played in the ECAC Tournament nine other times, enters the match with
a record of 12-5-2 this season while Wolverines will bring a mark of 13-6-1 into the contest. Wednesday's
other match has sixth seeded Frostburg State (MD) University (12-6-1) traveling to third
seeded Franklin & Marshall College (10-4). Top seed Johns Hopkins University
(15-3) and second seed Western Maryland College (14-5) each have byes on Wednesday. Western
Maryland will host the semifinals and finals on Saturday and Sunday.
Moravian, which is having its best season since a 12-7 mark in 1995, has scored nearly
twice as many goals (46 to 25) this season. The Greyhounds made the Commonwealth
Conference playoffs for the second straight season. Sophomore midfielder Tim Shannon
(Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley HS) leads the Greyhounds this season with 14 goals
and three assists for 31 points. Sophomore midfielder Mike Grillo (Dennington,
NJ/Pennington School)< has added seven goals and four assists for 18 points while senior
midfielder Evan Weller (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) has tallied six
goals and five assists for 17 points.
Junior forward Wilson Gonzalez (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) has added seven goals
and one assist for 15 points for the Greyhounds this season while freshman midfielder Ryan
Fick (Hamburg, PA/Fleetwood HS) leads Moravian with eight assists. Fick has added
two goals for 12 points. Senior midfielder Scott Heydt (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown
HS) has contributed three goals and three assists in his final season while sophomore
forward Anthony Merz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan HS) has found the back of
the net three times and added two assists.
Freshman midfielder Daniel Samuelsson (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon HS) has one
goal and six assists for eight points in his debut season while senior forward Nick
Jordal (Doylestown, PA/LaSalle College HS) has two goals and one assist in his final
season. Freshman midfielder Jonathan Thomas (Port Carbon, PA/Nativity BVM) has
one goal and one assist while freshmen midfielder Nick Tarquinio (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point
Pleasant Boro HS) and defender Jim Feimster (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mountain HS) each
have two assists on the year.
Senior midfielder Doug Becker (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood HS) and sophomore midfielder Brian
Donofrio (Havertown, PA/Archbishop Carroll HS) and Ken Macaulay (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge
HS) each have one assist.
In goal for the Greyhounds have been junior Ryan Sculley (Bethlehem, PA/Northampton
HS) and sophomore Vince Nasuta (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional HS). Sculley
has posted a 7-5-1 record, a 1.39 goals against average and one shutout in 1,297 minutes
with 74 saves. Nasuta has played 748 minutes with a 5-0-1 record, a 0.94 goals
against average, one shutout and 21 saves. The duo has combined on two other shutouts
this season to give Moravian four shutouts in 19 matches with a 1.27 goals against average.
For Grove City, who was the runner-up in the President's Athletic Conference, senior midfielder Chris
Crefeld leads the team in scoring with six goals and three assists for 15 points. Sophomore
forward Dustin King has also tallied six goals and he has added one assist for
13 points.
Senior midfielder Brian Williams has scored four assists and three goals for 11
points while freshman forward Dan Bryan has three goals and one assist. Senior
forward Jon Veschio and senior midfielder Sam Coffman each have added two
goals while junior back Nate Burgess leads Grove City with four assists.
Junior goalie Brad Smith has played all 1,868 minutes for the Wolverines this season
with a 0.96 goals against average, 59 saves and ten shutouts.
