26 GREYHOUNDS NAMED TO 2001-2002 WINTER MIDDLE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE ALL -ACADEMIC TEAM

ANNVILLE, PA --- The Moravian College winter athletic teams had 26 members named to the 2001-2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Winter-All-Academic Team with at least three members from each of the four winter sports and led by twelve honorees from the women's track and field team.

To be eligible for the MAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant reserve, a sophomore, junior, or senior and maintain a 3.2 grade-point average.

In addition to the twelve selections from the women's track and field team, the men's track and field team had five honorees.  The women's basketball team had six athletes selected, while the men's basketball team had three honorees.

Among the twelve women's track and field selections was senior Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) who won the MAC Championships in the 5,000 meters, breaking the MAC record with a time of 17:50.90, and she was a member of the distance medley relay team, who won it in a time of 12:29.59 breaking the MAC record.  Senior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy), who was also on the DMR team, was second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:53.01 and was third in the 800 meters, running 2:24.92.  Along with being a member of the DMR team, senior Amanda Samok (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) was fourth in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:03.37 at the MAC Championships.  Senior Jennifer Boberg (Lansford, PA/Panther Valley) was a member of the 4x800-meter relay team, winning it in a time of 9:57.96 setting a MAC record.  She also ran the 800 meters in 2:28.57 placing ninth.  Junior Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson) ran the 800 in 2:29.22 giving her a tenth place finish and was fifth in the 1,500 meters running a time of 4:59.92.  While senior, Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) was twelfth in the 1,500 with a time of 5:20.21 and thirteenth in the 800 running 2:35.62.

Senior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic, PA/Riverside) missed the MAC's due to an injury but she qualified in the 1,500, as a defending champion, with the 14th best time in the country this season.  She also qualified for the 5,000 meters, with a time of 17:11.7 making her third in the country, and she was part of the DMR team that has the tenth best time in the country, 12:08.3.  Sophomore Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler) placed seventh in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 9.95 and eighteenth in the 200 meters running 29.69 at the MAC Championships.  Classmate Christina Scherwin (Denmark) won the shot put with a MAC record throw of 43 feet, ten inches.  Junior Amanda Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) was third in the pole vault, eight feet, nine inches.  Rounding out the women's track and field selections are sophomores Angela Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) who was tenth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 19:19.58 and Jennifer Brief (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson).

Of the men's track and field team, junior John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg) was seventh in the weight throw, with a throw of 43 feet, 11 ¼ inches and finished twelfth in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 6 ¼ inches.  Junior Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) was ninth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 16:02.58.  While classmate, Justin Arnold (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) placed twentieth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:34.85.  Sophomore Scott Williams (Bangor, PA/Bangor) finished seventeenth in the weight throw, 33 feet, 5 ¾ inches at the MAC Championships while junior Eric Paul (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) was twenty-first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.24.

Honorees from the women's basketball team are junior Tara Wozniak (Roseland, NJ/West Essex Regional) who led the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game, 51 steals, 55 assists and was tied for second on the team for rebounds with 5.8 per game.  Classmate Kelly McLean (Allentown, PA/Salisbury) led the team in rebounds with 8.0 per game and blocks with 27, and was second in points with 11.8 per game.  Junior Kristen Sarnocinski (Harleysville, PA/Germantown Academy) scored 6.9 points per game, shot .746 from the free throw line and had 43 assists and 27 steals.  Sophomores Tracie Shipman (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan), 7.5 points per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, 31 steals and 18 assists, Kim Smith (Gilbert, PA/Pleasant Valley) contributed 65 points, 11 steals and 11 assists, and Megan Silverman (Wyomissing, PA/Wilson West Lawn) had 45 points, 23 steals, and 17 assists to help the team have a record of 16-10.

Rounding out the Moravian 2001-2002 MAC Winter All-Academic honorees is senior Doug Spadt (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) of the men's basketball team, who had 6.6 points per game, 41 steals, and 40 assists.  Also selected from the men's basketball team is sophomore Lucas Malishchak (Wanamie, PA/Nanticoke), who led the team in assists with 84, had 45 steals, and 6.5 points per game, and junior Willie Reynolds (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) who contributed 73 points, 17 assists and 9 steals.
