FOUR NAMED MORAVIAN STUDENT-ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

BETHLEHEM, PA --- Freshman Heather Bortz (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) from the softball team, senior Sarah Shaneberger (Bethlehem, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) of the women's outdoor track & field squad, junior David Kurvink (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) from the men's tennis team and freshman Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) of the men's outdoor track & field team have been named the Moravian College Student-Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.

Bortz, a shortstop, helped the Greyhounds to 4-0 record last week including doubleheader sweeps of Elizabethtown College and Dickinson College.  Bortz was four-for-six in the twin bill at Elizabethtown with four RBIs, a triple and a stolen base.  After being held hitless for just the fourth time in 21 games this season in the first contest with Dickinson, Bortz responded with a two-for-three, two stolen base performance in the second game.  For the week, Bortz hit .462 with a .615 slugging percentage and a .533 on-base percentage.  Moravian, ranked 21st in the nation, is 24-4 overall and returns to action on Tuesday, April 16th in a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader with Muhlenberg College at Patriots Park in Allentown.

Shaneberger won the hammer throw and the shot put at the Greyhound Invitational hosted by Moravian last weekend.  She took first in the hammer with a school record throw of 38.32 meters (125 feet, nine inches) and she won the shot put with a NCAA Division III provisional and Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifying toss of 12.54 meters (41 feet, 1 ¾ inches).  Shaneberger was second in the discus with an ECAC qualifying distance of 36.29 meters (119 feet).  The Greyhounds will compete at the Lafayette College Invitational this coming weekend.

Kurvink helped the men's tennis to a 2-1 record last week.  The Greyhounds, now 10-6 overall, clinched their second straight 10-win season and the squad needs just one more victory to earn its second straight Middle Atlantic Conference Playoff berth.  Kurvink was 3-0 at third singles last week and he combined with sophomore Mike Helmuth (Bethlehem, PA/Harrisonburg {VA} HS) to win three doubles contests.  Kurvink became the fourth Moravian player to earn 30 career singles victories with a win at Lebanon Valley College last Wednesday.  He currently has a career mark of 32-14-1.

Silvoy won a pair of events at the Greyhound Invitational and was also part of a winning relay squad. Silvoy won the 200 meters in an ECAC qualifying time of 22.31 seconds and he captured the 400 meters in an ECAC qualifying time of 49.11 seconds.  Silvoy also ran one leg of the 4x100-meter relay that set the stadium record at Steel Field and Breidegam Track with a winning time of 42.70 seconds.
