MORAVIAN WOMEN'S TRACK TAKES AIM AT 10th STRAIGHT MAC TITLE

BETHLEHEM, PA --- The senior members of the Moravian College women's track and field team are trying to accomplish several goals this weekend at the 2002 Middle Atlantic Conference Championships hosted by Susquehanna University from Thursday, May 2nd until Saturday, May 4th.

The Greyhounds are trying to extend Moravian's MAC Outdoor Championship streak to ten and finish their careers with eight MAC Track & Field titles.

Moravian has eight defending champions on its team, and 20 student-athletes are ranked 40 times in the top ten in the MAC in their events heading into the meet. Of those 20 student-athletes, nine are seniors ranked 21 times.

Senior distance runners Emily Shertzer (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin HS), the defending champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races, and senior Kim Jaick (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) lead the pack for the Greyhounds. Shertzer is ranked first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:01.00, and she is first in the 10,000 meters at 36:19.74 and second in the 5,000 meters at 17:42.75. Jaick is the conference's top runner in the 5,000 at 17:39.64, and she is second in the 10,000 at 36:32.00 and third in the 1,500 meters at 4:48.19.

Senior Erin Boyle (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy HS) is ranked second in the 1,500 at 4:40.94 and eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.43 heading into the championship meet. Senior Heidi Wolfsberger (Moosic, PA/Riverside HS), who has missed most of the spring with an injury, is sixth in the 1,500 at 4:50.79. Wolfsberger is the defending champion in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter races. Senior Tiffany Catalino (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom HS) is ranked sixth in the steeplechase, a new event this year, with a time of 12:4.44.

Senior sprinter and hurdler Steph Horne (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson West Lawn HS) enters the meet ranked third in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.47 seconds, sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:10.75 and ninth in the 100-meter dash at 13.22 seconds.

On the field, senior Sarah Shaneberger (Bethlehem, PA/Southern Lehigh HS) is the defending champion in the shot put and the hammer throw and she goes to the MAC meet ranked first in the hammer at 136-6, second in the shot put with a distance of 42-6 and third in the discus at 127-2. Senior Jennifer Lohn (Media, PA/Penncrest HS), the defending MAC Champion in the javelin, is third in the javelin with a throw of 132-4. Senior Carrie McCaffery (Lebanon, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) is ranked in four events.  She is second in the hammer at 125-5, second in the discus with a toss of 133-8, fourth in the javelin at 127-4 and sixth in the shot put at 36-5.

The Moravian underclassmen are helping the senior class get that final MAC title. Freshman Kirsten Rotzell (Bangor, PA/Bangor HS) enters the MAC meet ranked first in the long jump (17-2), first in the triple jump at 36-11 ½ and eighth in the 100 meters at 13.19 seconds while sophomore Christina Scherwin (Denmark) is first in the javelin at 183-8 and first in the shot put at 42-9 ¾.

In other field events, sophomore Amanda Wynn (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley HS) is second in the pole vault at 9-8 ½ while sophomore Alicia Fowler (Easton, PA/ Easton HS) is sixth in the hammer at 106-8, and freshman Julie Anderson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) is seventh in the discus at 106-7 and seventh in the hammer at 99-10. Sophomore Nicole Sabaliauskas (Butler, NJ/Butler HS) is tenth in the long jump at 15-4 ½ and, she is eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.59 seconds.

On the track, junior Jennifer Wagner (Riegelsville, PA/Wilson HS) is 2nd in the 800 at 2:21.20 and fifth in the 5,000 with a time of 19:00.62 while freshman Chelsea Mullins (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe HS) is third in the 10,000 at 38:32.69 and fifth in the 5,000 at 18:17.80. Sophomore Angie Morgan (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty HS) is fifth in the 10,000 at 40:09.00 and tenth in the 5,000 with a time of 19:18.87. Freshman Heather McGarvie (Medford, NJ/Shawnee HS) is fourth in the 1,500 in 4:49.01 while freshman Holly Bofinger (Warminster, PA/William Tennent HS) is tenth in the 10,000 with a time of 50:59.00.

The Moravian men's squad will be looking to improve on its third place finish from last season. The Greyhounds have a strong team this season with eight student-athletes ranked 13 times in the top ten of events heading into the MAC Championship.

Freshman sprinter Scott Silvoy (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic HS) and senior sprinter Kevin Bush (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg HS) lead the Greyhounds. Silvoy is ranked first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.15 seconds, and he is second in the 400-meter dash t 49.11 seconds and seventh in the 100-meter dash at 11.27 seconds. Bush is fourth in the 200 at 22.54 seconds, tenth in the 400 meters at 50.84 seconds and tenth in the 100 at 11.30 seconds.

Sophomore Joe Moore (Andover, NJ/Newton HS) enters the 2002 MAC Championships ranked first in the long jump at 22-11 ¼, and he is ninth in the high jump at 5-8. Sophomore John Lesoine (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg HS) is ranked third in the hammer throw with a distance of 144-7 while junior Matt Bowers (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona HS) is fourth in the hammer at 140-9.

Sophomore Joe Grady (Nanticoke, PA/Nanticoke HS) is sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:06.62 while junior Wes Zimmerman (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown HS) is eighth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:15.90, and junior George Wacker (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale HS) is ranked ninth in the 800 meters at 1:59.23.
